The NFL Network started an interesting series back in 2011 called NFL 100. The network polled NFL players and asked them to rank the 100 best players in the league. This year, two Green Bay Packers players ranked in the top ten. Aaron Rodgers was ranked third, and Mayfield Sports Marketing partner Davante Adams was ranked sixth. Additionally, our partners Aaron Jones (30) Jaire Alexander (41) were voted onto the list by their peers.
In addition to current Packers, we at Mayfield Sports Marketing partner with Packers’ legends. Many of these players are Super Bowl XXXI Champions and were top players in the NFL during their careers. As we looked at the NFL 100 list this year, we inserted the Super Bowl XXXI players who partnered with us using stats from the best season of their careers.
Dorsey Levens remains an immensely popular Green Bay Packers legend. In 1997, Levens had one of the most productive seasons in the history of Packers running backs with over 1,800 all-purpose yards. In this year’s NFL 100, the 26th ranked player was Cleveland’s, Nick Chubb. While many may believe this is too high to rank Levens, consider how his numbers in 1997 compared to Chubb’s in 2020.
| Dorsey Levens | Nick Chubb | |
| Rushing Attempts | 329 | 190 |
| Rushing Yards | 1,435 | 1,067 |
| Rushing Yards per Game | 89.7 | 88.9 |
| Rushing Touchdowns | 7 | 12 |
| Receptions | 53 | 16 |
| Receiving Yards | 370 | 150 |
| Receiving Touchdowns | 5 | 0 |
| Catch Percentage | 79.1% | 88.9% |
| Total Yards | 1,805 | 1,117 |
It should be noted that Chubb played 12 games in 2020 whereas Levens played 16 in 1997. Nevertheless, Levens’ production still should have placed him higher than Chubb on this list.
Between 1997 and 1999, Antonio Freeman put up three straight 1,000 yard seasons. In the middle of this run, his 1998 season, Freeman put up one of the best receiving seasons in Packers history. That year, in 15 games, Freeman led the NFL in both receiving yards and receiving yards per game. His production would have been good enough in 2020 to supplant Minnesota rookie Justin Jefferson for 53rd on the NFL 100 list.
| Antonio Freeman | Justin Jefferson | |
| Receptions | 84 | 88 |
| Receiving Yards | 1,424 | 1,400 |
| Touchdowns | 14 | 7 |
| Receiving Yards per Game | 94.9 | 87.5 |
| Catch Percentage | 54.9% | 70.4% |
As seen above, Freeman had more yards, yards per game, and touchdowns in one less game than Jefferson played in 2020. Had Freeman played in the 16th game, he surely would have had more receptions too. Jefferson is a young star on the rise. However, if 1998 Antonio Freeman had been in the NFL last year, he would have been ranked higher than the Vikings’ rookie.

The “Gravedigger” is one of the most iconic Packers players in recent memory. A force on the defensive line, he did not always need to rack up the stats to make an impact. His massive frame plugged up holes disallowing running backs from making big gains. His best season came in 1996 when he helped the Packers win Super Bowl XXXI.
During that season, Gilbert recorded a single sack. Research of the number of tackles he recorded that season did not render any results. However, his dominance in stuffing runners would have led him to rank 78th on the list. Of special note, Gilbert’s plugging of running lanes helped the Packers hold Hall of Fame running back Curtis Martin to just 42 rushing yards in the Super Bowl.
Unlike the lost stats for Gilbert Brown’s 1996 season, the stats for Santana Dotson’s 1997 campaign are readily available. 1997 was, arguably, his best for the Green Bay Packers. Though he did not make the Pro Bowl that season, his numbers in many ways surpass those of Fletcher Cox. Cox has been named to the Pro Bowl six years in a row.
| Santana Dotson | Fletcher Cox | |
| Tackles | 71 | 41 |
| Sacks | 5.5 | 6.5 |
| Forced Fumbles | 2 | 1 |
| Fumbles Recovered | 0 | 0 |
The signing of Dotson in 1996 is one of the most underrated free-agent signings in Packers history. Additionally, he is one of the most underappreciated players from that Super Bowl team. As seen by his 1997 numbers, he was an absolute monster on the defensive line.
This may be a bit of a stretch. After all, no one on the NFL 100 is a punt or kick returner by trade. This is why we have put Desmond Howard at the 100th rank on the list.
That being said, if there was an NFL 100 list in 1997, the year after Howard’s astounding season with the Packers, he surely would have been on it. 1996 was the only full season in which Howard played with the Packers. During that campaign, he led the NFL in the following categories:
| Punt Returns | 58 |
| Punt Return Yards | 875 |
| Touchdowns | 3 |
| Yards per Return | 15.1 |
After dominating special teams all season, Howard did it again in the Super Bowl. In the Packers’ victory over the Patriots, Howard gained 154 kick return yards, returned a punt 90 yards (a record at that point), and became the first special teams player to be named Super Bowl MVP.

The Green Bay Packers have a plethora of talent on their team this year. Many players who would be locks for other team’s rosters may end up getting cut from the Packers’ final roster. Of the players who are locks, Packers Wide Receivers Allen Lazard and Marquez Valdes-Scantling, two players whom we at Mayfield Sports have worked with in the past, are in an interesting competition. Both players are entering contract seasons. Additionally, both are candidates for the Packers’ second wide receiver position.
Of course, Davante Adams is the Packers’ number one wide receiver. After him, though, there is a battle for which player will take the second guaranteed starting spot. Both Lazard and Valdes-Scantling (MVS) had opportunities to be the second starter last season. Both had some fantastic games, but also had their separate struggles. Coming into camp, there was no clear-cut number two option at wide receiver. Undoubtedly, however, it will be one of these two players.
The decision of which of the two players will start at the second wide receiver position is very difficult. Each brings unique strengths to the offense. The question is which one is better or has the most potential to be a number two option. What complicates it further is that their stats from last season do not lend much help.
| Lazard | MVS | |
| Games | 10 | 16 |
| Receptions | 33 | 33 |
| Yards | 451 | 690 |
| Touchdowns | 3 | 6 |
| Catch % | 71.7 % | 52.4 % |
| Drop % | 10.9 % | 11.1 % |
| Yards/Game | 45.1 | 43.1 |
| Yards/Rec. | 13.7 | 20.9 |
From the stats above, it would appear that MVS had a much better season than Allen Lazard. However, it should be taken into consideration that Lazard missed six games due to a core muscle injury that required surgery. Additionally, he came back midseason and was still hampered by the injury. Taking that into consideration, one would assume that had the two played the same amount of games, it would have been Lazard with better statistics. After all, Lazard had a higher catch percentage and lower drop rate than MVS. That being said, “what ifs” do not help answer the question.
The Green Bay Packers played two playoff games last season. As the number one seed, they were able to sit out of the Wild Card round before facing the Los Angeles Rams in the Divisional Round. Here is how MVS and Lazard compared in that game:
| Player | Receptions | Yards | Touchdowns |
| MVS | 4 | 33 | 0 |
| Lazard | 4 | 96 | 1 |
After defeating the Rams, the Packers hosted the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC Championship. Again, here is how the two receivers faired in that contest:
| Player | Receptions | Yards | Touchdowns |
| MVS | 4 | 115 | 1 |
| Lazard | 3 | 62 | 0 |
Based on these games, the two receivers combined for roughly the same stats. In other words, they were equally productive. Clearly, the answer to the question must come from training camp and preseason games.
As head coach Matt LaFleur stated, no player that he deems valuable to the Packers’ preparation from Week One of the regular season will play a snap of any preseason games. That means that neither MVS nor Allen Lazard will be on the field in any of the team’s remaining preseason games. The answer to our question of who will be the number two receiver, then, will be determined in training camp.
The case for Allen Lazard to be the team’s number two wide receiver is that he is a reliable target. He had a 71.7% catch percentage last season, which was second on the team (behind Davante Adams). Additionally, Aaron Rodgers had a 124.5 passer rating when targeting Lazard. By comparison, he had a 109.9 passer rating when targeting MVS.
Lazard showcased his potential last season in the game in which he actually injured his core. Against the Saints in Week Three, Lazard had six receptions for 146 yards and a touchdown. For a brief moment, it appeared as if he had locked up the second receiver position for good.
Few wide receivers in the NFL last season were criticized as much as MVS was. That being said, few wide receivers are as fast as MVS is. While the drops were a problem last season, reports from training camp state that he is using his body less to catch passes, a technique that led to drops last season. If MVS can cut those dropped passes in half, the Packers will have a second 1,000 receiver on the team.
The reason why MVS put up the numbers he did was because of his speed. He is a lethal downfield weapon who can blow by most defenders. His 20.9 yards per reception last season led not only the Packers, but the entire NFL.
There is no clear answer to this question, and with limited eyes on the practice field it will be difficult to guess what Matt LaFleur is going to do. One thing is for sure, though: both players are highly qualified and will be key contributors to the Packers’ 2021 season, and hopefully their Super Bowl run.

If you’re looking for a way to increase sales and improve overall brand awareness, prominent sports figures are attractive options. Their athletic prowess gives them instant credibility to any product, particularly anything related to those geared towards athletes. With that being said, their celebrity alone will influence fans to want to be like them and be associated with the same products or services. Your business would most likely benefit from this association, and this is true whether it’s a big name or not and for pretty much any type of product, service, or business.
While the actual influence celebrity athletes have regarding advertising is a matter of debate, a Harvard University professor and Barclays Capital conducted a study that indicated sales growth compared to their previous numbers and overall placement in the market as well. The study showed an average increase of around 4%, with more considerable gains from those with higher status. Fans of a particular team or specific athlete will be more inclined to purchase a product or use a service endorsed by them.
One key aspect of growing your brand is making people aware of your brand. Attaching a local or national athlete quickly raises awareness for anyone who’s a fan of that individual or the team for which they play. Once people are aware of your brand’s products or services, they would be more likely to purchase from you. A potential customer’s favorable feelings towards the celebrity athlete can and often will translate to your company. Aaron Rodger's State Farm commercials and Brett Favre's Wrangler commercials are just a couple of examples.
Social media promotion by an athlete can increase that awareness even more. According to Opendorse, athletes on social media drive 4.8 times the engagement of media accounts, 3.6 times the engagement of league accounts, 2.4 times the engagement of team accounts, and 2.1 times the engagement of influencer accounts. It just goes to show how associating your brand with an athlete can push awareness and engagement through the roof.
Keep it local, and consider using a celebrity athlete from your home team. A small business that uses a local athlete of any profile brings much-wanted attention and awareness to your brand and business. For example, in Green Bay or anywhere in the state of Wisconsin, having any member of the Green Bay Packers at your event or endorsing your product will generate interest and get more eyes on you. Sticking to someone who is known and admired or associated with a known and admired team, locally and with your target market, pays huge dividends.
Once you’ve decided to utilize a celebrity athlete to help market your product or service, you need to know how to utilize a celebrity athlete. There are various ways to do so, and whichever way you choose will depend on what’s the best fit for your business and your products or services. The first way would be to have them endorse your brand. An endorsement could be digital, radio, print, television, etc., advertising depending on where you’re most likely to find your target market.
If you have an event coming up, having a celebrity appearance will bring more attention and most likely increase attendance. You can add an autograph signing session as part of your event or even have the signing be the event that you’re hosting. Either way, associating the celebrity athlete with your brand is the key. You can also sponsor a celebrity athlete to do a motivational speech for a local school or organization. Approaching your relationship this way gives the double whammy of giving back to the community as well as associating you with the athlete.

Even though there won’t be a physical Pro Bowl game played this year, the honor for being selected as a 2021 Pro Bowlers does not change. Athletes are chosen for the Pro Bowl by coaches, players, and fans, with each contingent making up one-third of the vote. We here at Mayfield Sports Marketing would like to celebrate the seven of our home state Packers who were selected along with a few other players across the league.
After being snubbed last year, Za’Darius Smith gets the selection he rightfully deserves for the 2021 Pro Bowl. After 15 games this season, Smith is tied for third in the NFL with 12.5 sacks and tied for fifth in tackles for loss as well as 34 solo tackles and 16 assists. Over his two seasons with the Packers, Smith has garnered 26 sacks, the first Packer to have 11+ sacks in back to back seasons since Aaron Kampman accomplished the feat in 2006.
NFL Network’s pre-season list of the top 100 players in the NFL featured Smith at number 48. USA Today’s touchdown wire had him ranked as the number one edge defender, and Pete Prisco of CBS Sports had Smith as number 28 overall of all NFL players.
For an amazing fourth consecutive year, Davante Adams has been selected to the 2021 Pro Bowl. With separation ability second to none with a lightning-fast release and rapid footwork along with an uncanny ability to make contested catches deep down the field, Adams has placed himself among the elite receivers not just of this season but in history. He finished the season with 115 catches and 18 touchdown receptions, only the third ever to exceed 100 catches and 16 touchdown receptions in a single season.
While all three Packer’s single-season receiving records were in range going into the last game, Adams was able to break the receptions record of 112 previously held by Sterling Sharpe in 1993. He tied the receiving touchdowns record, also set by Sterling Sharpe in 1994. He came up just shy of Jordy Nelson’s reception yards record of 1519 yards set in 2014. Adams ended the season with 1374 yards.
The fact that he broke one record, tied another, and got so close to another is made even more incredible by the fact he missed nearly three full games to injury. There are no guarantees, of course, but it would certainly seem very likely that all three records would have fallen if Adams had a full season to work, but it’s an amazing feat nonetheless.
If you have been watching the Packers closely, you know that Jaire Alexander is a star. Becoming widely-known as a shutdown corner, currently ranked number two by Pro Football Focus, Alexander is getting the attention of opposing quarterbacks. Last season, Alexander was targeted 6.9 times per game. This year that number dipped to about 5.5 targets per game. After allowing a quarterback rating of only 85.8 last year, he has improved that number to 71.3 this year.
Currently sitting at number two on Pro Football Focus’s ranking of offensive tackles, David Bakhtiari has been selected to his third pro bowl. Widely regarded as one of the league's best tackles in the game, Bakhtiari has continued to build upon those accolades. A big reason for the Packers’ success this season has stemmed from the stellar protection of future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers. David Bakhtiari, as the blindside tackle, is a huge reason for that. Unfortunately, after a freak injury at a non-contact practice, the Packers will be forced to make their Super Bowl run without Bakhtiari, putting a damper on their chances.
Versatility. That is Elgton Jenkins to an absolute T. Officially, he’s a left guard, but he possesses the scarce ability to not only play anywhere on the line but excel at all three positions. This year has seen him play guard, tackle, and center while only allowing a single sack overall. Usually, an offensive lineman is played on a single position, occasionally playing their position on the other side of the line, not so with Jenkins, who will move around to cover any position based on injury and those available to fill in. When center Corey Lindsey was injured, Jenkins moved to that spot to more easily fill the guard position. And again, Jenkins excelled.
Currently sitting fourth in rushing yards, twelfth in rushing touchdowns, and first on runs of 40 plus yards, Aaron Jones was selected to his first-ever Pro Bowl after many feeling that he was snubbed last year. With one game remaining, he has accrued eight rushing touchdowns this season. If he can get two more, he’ll become only the second Packer ever, Jim Taylor the other, with consecutive seasons with double-digit touchdowns and over 1,000 rushing yards.
In a Hall of Fame career with many amazing seasons, Aaron Rodgers is putting together one of the best in 2020, comparable only to his MVP season in 2011. A front runner to win the MVP again this year was selected to his ninth Pro Bowl for 2021, tying the Packers record for Pro Bowl selections. Currently, he sits sixth in passing yards, second in completion percentage, first in quarterback rating, first in touchdown to interception rating with an incredible 8.8 TDs per interception thrown, first in touchdown passes, and first in interception percentage.
After leading the fan voting for the top NFC running back, Dalvin Cook will return to the Pro Bowl for the second straight year. Cook is currently second in the NFL in rushing yards and tenth among RBs for yards per carry. He’s also leading the league in yards from scrimmage, rushes for first downs, and tied for the lead for rushing touchdowns.
In his fourth season, Alvin Kamara has again been selected to the Pro Bowl, making a Pro Bowl nod for each season he’s been in the league. On Christmas Day, Kamara rushed for 155 yards and tied the NFL record for most rushing touchdowns in a single game with six, a record established and never touched in 91 years.
Despite a historic rookie season in 2018, Darius Leonard did not make the Pro Bowl that year. He has, however, been selected the past two years. Currently, he is sitting tied for ninth in the league in tackles. Displaying an incredible knack for making game-changing impact plays, look for Leonard to make many more Pro Bowls to come.
Xavian Howard is leading the league in passes defended and interceptions and in contention for Defensive Player of the Year. Being selected to his second Pro Bowl, the other being at the conclusion of the 2018 season, he’s one of the best players on one of the top defenses this year. He needs one more interception to tie the franchise record set in 1967.

Even without a physical game being played this year, making the Pro Bowl is really more about the honor of being selected as one of the best at your position. Fans get to enjoy watching the players compete for this year’s Pro Bowl via Madden ‘21. Congratulations to all the players who made it this year, especially the ones listed above.

Xavien Howard is in the Defensive Player of the Year discussion and a big game against K.C. will really help.

Xavien Howard, Miami Dolphins
For the 2nd time this season, Xavien Howard will enter a game with a chance to get five interceptions in five games but this time its against K.C.
If Howard is going to bring a Defensive MVP award home to the Miami Dolphins, he will need to make a statement on Sunday against the Chiefs. Howard is on another four game interception streak. While he is getting national MVP attention, he still isn’t turning enough heads. Yet.
Tomorrow, Howard will have a shot at his 9th interception on the season. If the Miami Dolphins can beat the Chiefs and Howard can shutdown whoever he is covering, that national narrative is going to get a big wake up call.
Howard is clearly having the best year of his career but until the Dolphins become real contenders they won’t earn the respect around the league. That is just how it goes. Teams that are bad need to have a dominating player on the field that clearly stands out. In the L.A., the Rams have Aaron Donaldson who has won the award two of the last three years. Last year it was Stephon Gilmore.
The last Miami Dolphins to win the award was way back in 2006 when Jason Taylor took the award. Could Howard become the fourth player in team history to get the award. Dick Anderson and Doug Betters also took home the award.
While Howard has two four-game stretches this year, he has not recorded a multi-interception game yet. Could he do that tomorrow against the best offense in the NFL?
The Game
In Week 14, the Kansas City Chiefs return to the scene of their Super Bowl LIV triumph over the San Francisco 49ers. This time they will take on the Miami Dolphins in their home stadium. The game will kick off at Noon (Arrowhead Time) and will be carried by CBS-TV — locally on KCTV/5.
With a playoff berth already in hand, a victory against Miami (or a Las Vegas Raiders loss against the Indianapolis Colts) will clinch the 11-1 Chiefs their fifth consecutive AFC West title. They’re coming off a 22-16 victory over the Denver Broncos at Arrowhead Stadium last Sunday, which was their seventh straight win.
Now a game behind the Buffalo Bills in the AFC East at 8-4, the Dolphins need a victory to maintain their chance at the playoffs and the possibility of a division championship. Miami hasn’t won the East since 2008 — or a playoff game since 2000.
The Chiefs are led by quarterback Patrick Mahomes. He is now the NFL’s all-time leader in career passer rating (110.3), passing yards per game (307.6) and interception percentage (1.3%). He’s currently leading the NFL in passing yards (3,815), interception percentage (0.4%) and net yards per passing attempt (7.80). He is also regarded as the front-runner to win 2020’s NFL MVP award. It would be his second such honor in three seasons as Kansas City’s starter — and is the reigning Super Bowl MVP.
First-round rookie quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is making his sixth start as the leader of the Dolphins offense. The former Alabama quarterback was selected fifth overall in last spring’s NFL draft, completing 63.2% of his passes for 898 yards (and seven touchdowns) through seven games this season — good for a passer rating of 99.4. He has been sacked just ten times and has yet to throw an NFL interception.
But if things go badly under center, the Dolphins have magic in their back pocket: 38-year-old Ryan Fitzpatrick, now in his 16th NFL season for his eighth NFL team. He started the first six games of 2020, going 3-3 before giving way to Tagovailoa after the Dolphins’ Week 7 bye. He came in for the rookie during the fourth quarter of the Week 11 loss to the Denver Broncos — and also while Tagovailoa was out with an injury in Week 12.
Fitzpatrick may never play another snap for Miami, but Chiefs fans will never forget the Fitzmagic they saw during last season’s thrilling Dolphins victory over the New England Patriots in Week 17 — a win that paved the way for Kansas City to grab the AFC’s second seed on the way to the Super Bowl.

His quick rise to stardom on the field and love for the Jumpman brand made the endorsement a no-brainer. Mayfield Marketing can connect you with hard-working athletes such as Davante Adams.
Brett Favre and Green Eagle
The NFL Hall of Famer and former Packers player, Brett Favre, has recently joined with a CBD company called Green Eagle. This endorsement fits both Favre’s and Green Eagle’s mission and ethics perfectly. Generating awareness for an effective, THC pain relief option was important to Favre and the endorsement gives him that opportunity. Mayfield Marketing can also help you align a partnership with an athlete who mirrors the beliefs of your company.

For your business to achieve greatness, your employees need to be motivated. While the business year may start off promising, you may start to notice a lack of productivity and focus. Employees become focused on simply achieving their everyday tasks while lacking sight of the big picture. A visit from a professional athlete as your motivational speaker may be just what your business needs.
Motivational speakers have been rising in popularity for decades. Bringing someone in to talk to your employees, virtually or in person, can be just the inspiration and motivation needed. Providing hope that they can tap into their own talents and make a positive change in their lives. If you’re unsure whether this is the right choice for your employees, here are some of the top reasons why your business needs a motivational speaker now more than ever.
The most important thing a motivational speaker does is light a spark in your employees. Doing so requires someone who can encourage them to embrace where they’re at in life and strive to do better. A good motivational speaker is made from years of hard work, determination, and overcoming their own obstacles. Being open about their professional failures and accomplishments allows speakers to connect with your audience on a personal level while keeping their attention throughout the duration of their speech. This will encourage and grow enthusiasm in the workplace and inspire employees to do their best work.
Motivational speakers boost the drive and motivate your employees to do more, be more, and give more. An increase in workplace happiness will encourage a more focused, energetic atmosphere. Improvements among your staff will likely last for days, weeks, and even months after attending a motivational speaker, virtually or in person. You should notice a change in your staff, from mediocrity to becoming an engaged team who will work together to boost the profitability of the business.
At Mayfield Sports Marketing, we have a great network of professional athletes that excel at motivational speaking, whether you’re looking to host a virtual or in-person event. Mayfield Sports Marketing can connect with booking agents for players like:
Brett Favre is an NFL legend with a 20-year career as an accomplished quarterback. He played in 299 consecutive NFL games, scored 509 touchdowns during his career, and guided the Packers to a win in Super Bowl XXXI.
Jerry Kramer is known best as an offensive lineman for the Greenbay Packers and for the signature play the “Packer Sweep”. He is also an accomplished author and sports commentator.
Desmond Howard not only is an accomplished return specialist in the NFL but a wide receiver as well. He is the recipient of the Heisman Trophy and currently works as a college football analyst for ESPN.
Gilbert Brown is a Green Bay Packers legend and Packers Hall of Famer. He played 125 games for the team with a recorded 292 tackles. He has helped coach, started a foundation for inner-city children, and donates to many other charitable causes.
Each of these players has their own story of overcoming personal obstacles to excel in their careers that are sure to motivate your employees to perform to the best of their ability.

Joe Thomas played his entire 11-season professional career for the Cleveland Browns. He played college football for the University of Wisconsin, earned unanimous All-American honors, and was recognized as the top college interior lineman.
The Browns chose Thomas with the third overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft. He was invited to the Pro Bowl in each of his first 10 seasons and did not miss a single play in his career until the 2017 season (his final season in the NFL); his 10,363 consecutive snaps played is the longest streak since the NFL began recording snap counts in 1999. He is regarded as one of the best offensive linemen of all time.
Thomas signed a six-year contract worth $43 million, $23 million guaranteed, including a voidable year, with the Browns. Thomas won the starting left tackle job, with previous Browns left tackle Kevin Shaffer moving to right tackle. He made his NFL debut versus the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 1 and played every offensive snap for the Browns in 2007.
Thomas quickly became one of the top-performing members of the 2007 draft class and was named the NFL's Rookie of the Month for November. Thomas was selected to the 2008 Pro Bowl, replacing Jason Peters of the Buffalo Bills. He was named to the NFL All-Rookie Team.
Thomas came in second in the voting for NFL Rookie of the Year. He was the only player to receive votes besides the eventual winner, Adrian Peterson.
On August 22, 2011, Thomas and the Browns agreed to a record-setting seven-year, $84 million extension with $44 million guaranteed.
On December 27, 2011, Thomas was named to his fifth straight Pro Bowl since the Browns drafted him. Since 1970, Thomas and Richmond Webb of the Miami Dolphins are the only NFL offensive linemen to make the Pro Bowl in each of their first five seasons.
Thomas and Pro Football Hall of Fame running back Jim Brown are the only Browns players ever to be selected to the Pro Bowl for the first five seasons of their careers. Hall of Fame running back Leroy Kelly was the last Browns player to earn five or more consecutive invitations to the Pro Bowl. For the third consecutive season, he was named as a First-Team All-Pro. He was ranked 82nd by his peers on the NFL Top 100 Players of 2012.
On March 14, 2018, Thomas announced his retirement from the NFL. Despite retiring with a career record of 48 wins, 128 losses, and no playoff appearances, Thomas provided a bright spot on the often struggling Cleveland Browns, playing 10,363 consecutive snaps (the longest streak since snap counts were first recorded in 1999), being voted to ten Pro Bowls, seven first-team All-Pro selections, and two-second team All-Pro selections during his 11 seasons; he has widely been regarded as one of the NFL's greatest offensive lineman of all time, particularly noted as one of the best left tackles in NFL history.
In April 2020 Thomas was named to the 2010s NFL All-Decade team. Noted for his durability, quickness, and athleticism at left tackle, many attribute his legendary pass blocking skills to his unorthodox style, utilizing a "shot put" method to kick off the line; Of 6,680 pass-blocking attempts, Thomas allowed only 30 sacks during his career. He was also known for rarely committing holding penalties.
Joe Thomas is the only offensive lineman in NFL history to be voted to ten consecutive Pro Bowls. He was chosen on NFL.com as the 7th greatest offensive tackle of all time, as well as the third greatest Cleveland Brown of all time. He will be eligible for the Hall of Fame in 2023.
