The Green Bay Packers already had speed at linebacker. They already had young talent, too. What they did not always have was somebody who could take charge when the defense started scrambling before the snap. That is why Zaire Franklin feels like a much bigger addition than a normal offseason pickup.
On May 27, during OTAs, Matt LaFleur confirmed Franklin would wear the green dot and handle communication duties for the Packers' defense in 2026. That instantly explained Green Bay’s thinking behind the move.
Zaire Franklin Gives the Packers The Defensive Voice They Were Missing

Indianapolis Colts linebacker Zaire Franklin (44) celebrates a touchdown from the sideline Sunday, Oct. 5, 2025, during a game against the Las Vegas Raiders at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
When Quay Walker left for the Las Vegas Raiders earlier this offseason, the Packers lost more than tackles in the middle of the field. They lost the defense's voice. Walker handled adjustments, relayed calls, and kept everybody lined up when offenses started speeding things up.
Now that responsibility belongs to Franklin. The veteran linebacker arrives in Green Bay with years of experience handling exactly that role with the Indianapolis Colts. Franklin became one of the league’s most active signal-callers during his time there, and the Packers clearly trust him to bring stability to a defense that looked disorganized at times last season.
That trust showed up immediately during OTAs. LaFleur left no room for debate about who would handle communication duties. Franklin stepped into the building and quickly became the guy wearing the green dot.
The move also says plenty about Edgerrin Cooper’s role moving forward. Cooper looks like the explosive playmaker in that linebacker room. He attacks downhill, reacts naturally, and plays fast. The Packers probably do not want him overloaded with pre-snap communication responsibilities right now. Franklin allows Cooper to focus on making plays instead of directing traffic.
That balance could help the entire defense. Franklin also brings production to the leadership. Back in 2024, he earned second-team All-Pro honors after recording 173 tackles, 3.5 sacks, two interceptions, and five forced fumbles with Indianapolis. Even though his numbers dipped to 125 tackles in 2025, Green Bay still views him as somebody who can steady the defense in big moments.
There is another important layer here, too. Packers defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon already worked with Franklin during their time together in Indianapolis from 2018 through 2020. That familiarity should help Franklin settle into Green Bay’s system quickly once training camp begins.
The Packers did not need another quiet linebacker this offseason. They needed somebody who could own the huddle. That is exactly what Franklin brings to Green Bay.
