Packers Hit the Jackpot With Fourth-Round Pick Evan Williams as Safety Continues Rapid Rise

The Packers believed in Evan Williams long before most teams did. They acquired him in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Cut to now, that decision feels like one of the best decisions ever. Williams then amazingly grew from just a rookie into a fine starter who rarely comes off the field.

Williams has actually tackled almost twice the workload as in his rookie year, improved in key areas of coverage, and become one of Green Bay's top defenders against the run. Rather than fading with more responsibility, Williams looked even more comfortable.

Evan Williams did not immediately start his rookie season as a starter. He began behind Javon Bullard before earning a role next to Xavier McKinney after Bullard moved into the slot. Once he got that chance, he never gave it back. He started all but one game in 2025 and saw his defensive snaps jump from 533 in 2024 to 979.

Former DC Jeff Hafley used Williams much more aggressively in the box. After playing only 91 snaps there as a rookie, Williams logged 303 box snaps in 2025. That really helped strengthen Green Bay's run defense and highlighted another part of his game.

Even PFF credited Williams with 101 total tackles, and he ranked second among NFL safeties in assisted tackles per snap. He even worked on one of his big weaknesses from past.

His missed tackle rate dropped from 14.8 per cent to 12.2 per cent showing better consistency in open space. But penalties are something Williams needs to get over in 2026. He was flagged five times last season, up from zero penalties in 2024.

The Packers thought Williams could  become a contributor when they traded up for him in 2024. Two years later, he has become much more than that. He has developed into a reliable starter, a key piece of the run defence and another example of Green Bay finding major value outside the early rounds of the NFL Draft.
