Matthew Golden's first season came and went with little buzz. The credentials were modest, and he often found himself competing for touches in a crowded Packers offense. Still, Green Bay saw enough from the former first-round pick to believe bigger things could be on the horizon heading into the new season.
There is a growing feeling around the team that Golden is ready for a big role. With more chances available, he embarked on his second season with a key role. If he continues to build on the flashes he showed last season, the champ could undoubtedly become a dependable guy of the team's offense.

Golden finished his rookie season with 29 catches for 361 yards in 14 regular-season games after the Packers selected him 23rd overall in the 2025 NFL Draft. Those numbers looked modest, mainly for a first-round receiver. But the story goes far beyond numbers.
The former Texas star spent much of the season competing for targets in one of the NFL's deepest receiver rooms. Even with few chances, the champ shows his prowess on the field. Those are the types of plays coaches love.
But now things have changed. Romeo Doubs is no longer with the team. That opens a significant number of targets. TE Tucker Kraft continues his recovery from the torn ACL he suffered last season. Christian Watson remains one of the league's great receivers, but has battled injuries throughout his career.
Back on June 2, during Packers media availability, WR Jayden Reed spoke highly of Golden's progress.
"It's going to be a huge jump for MG, man," Reed told reporters. "You can tell the game is slowing down for him. He's learning the plays much better. You can tell he's just more comfortable out there. He's going to be dangerous for this offense."
That endorsement carries weight because Reed sees Golden's development every day.
There's another thing that we can't ignore. The Packers chose not to draft a WR in the 2026 NFL Draft. That showed their trust in the current guys and, more specifically, in Golden's growth. His rise already appeared late last season. He delivered an 86-yard performance against Cincinnati and followed it with an 84-yard outing in the playoffs against Chicago, including his first postseason touchdown.
Year 2 is often when talented receivers put everything together. For Matthew Golden, the opportunity is there. If he earns a full-time starting role and continues building chemistry with Jordan Love, Green Bay may soon have its next great offensive weapon.
