Born on July 27, 1956, in Fort Ord, California, Lofton’s football journey began playing quarterback and safety at George Washington High School. Lofton went on to excel in both football and track at Stanford University.
Lofton won the long jump at the 1978 NCAA Track and Field Championships. However, his performance on the football field is what led to his historic career. He totaled 1,216 yards and 16 touchdowns in three years at Stanford.
His exceptional performance in college led him to be selected by the Green Bay Packers as the sixth overall pick in the 1978 NFL Draft.
Over his illustrious 16-season career, Lofton showcased his extraordinary talent, playing for several teams including the Packers, Los Angeles Raiders, Buffalo Bills, and a few others.
With a career that spanned from 1978 to 1993, Lofton accumulated numerous accolades. He was an eight-time Pro Bowl selection and a four-time All-Pro, known for his explosive speed and reliable hands. His 14,004 receiving yards and 756 receptions at the time of his retirement were among the highest in NFL history, solidifying his legacy as one of the greatest wide receivers of all time. Lofton’s ability to make game-changing plays and his deep-threat capability set him apart in an era of fierce competition.
A majority of Lofton’s career came as a member of the Packers. He spent his first nine seasons in Green Bay. In that time he was selected to seven Pro Bowls and earned one All-Pro Selection. He totaled 9,656 yards as a member of the team.He is currently second in receiving yards all time for the franchise.
In 1987 he went on to play for the Los Angeles Raiders where he would spend two seasons. He would then spend four seasons with the Buffalo Bills. In 1993 he spent time on the Rams and Eagles.
Lofton was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2003, 10 years after he retired. The longevity and durability of his career can not be overstated. Lofton was the first NFL player to score a touchdown in the 1970s,1980s, and 1990s.
Lofton has spent time as both a coach and broadcaster since his retirement from playing. He was a wide receiver coach for the San Diego Chargers from 2002-2008. He has been a game analyst with NFL on CBS since 2017.
