When the Green Bay Packers selected free safety, Nick Collins, in the second round of the 2005 NFL Draft, most of the so-called draft “experts” were underwhelmed. Collins was dubbed a “major reach” and “raw”. Even vaunted NFL draft expert Mel Kiper Jr. dubbed the pick questionable.
Little did all these experts know that Nick Collins would end up as the starting free safety for the Packers in Super Bowl XLV and a member of the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame.
Nick Collins has extensive ties to his home state of Florida, where he currently resides. From his stellar athletic days at Dixie County High School where he lettered in football, basketball, and baseball to his years at Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Collins has always thought of Florida as home sweet home.
When Darren Sharper left the Packers to sign with the Minnesota Vikings, the coaching staff started looking for a player to take his place at free safety. Collins didn’t disappoint. His work ethic and his athletic ability earned him a starting spot by game one of his rookie season against Detroit.
Over a seven-year career with the Packers, Collins was named to the Pro Bowl three times, made second-team All-Pro three times, and led the NFC in interceptions in 2008. Fans fondly remember the early interception against Ben Roethlisberger in the Super Bowl that put the Packers up 14-0. After a career-ending neck injury suffered in a game against Carolina, Collins retired after seven seasons in 2014.
Nick Collins is living the NFL retirement life down in Orlando, FL, with his wife Andrea and five children. He maintains connections with his Green Bay fanbase and enjoys interacting with fans and reliving his Green Bay Packer days. Ideal for player appearances and speaking engagements.
