Why Savion Williams is the Ultimate Fantasy Football Sleeper Candidate for the Upcoming Season

Savion Williams still feels overlooked heading into the new season, and that may help fantasy football managers. The Packers quietly created a bigger opening for the second-year receiver after Romeo Doubs got traded to the Patriots earlier in the offseason. With Green Bay also tweaking its coaching setup, Williams seems like one of the intriguing late-round fantasy picks on the board.

Williams finished his rookie season with only 10 catches for 78 yards and one TD. Those credentials will scare away casual fantasy players. But the Packers never asked him to operate as a full-time receiver in 2025. Matt LaFleur used him on gadget plays and motion packages, and instead designed touches. Green Bay viewed him more as an offensive weapon than a polished route runner.

The main reason Williams feels like a real sleeper comes from the changes around him. Green Bay hired former Penn State assistant Noah Pauley as WR coach in Feb. 2026, according to CBS Sports insider Matt Zenitz. Pauley built a strong resume for developing receivers and previously worked with Christian Watson at North Dakota State.

That matters because Williams entered the NFL as one of the rawest athletes in the Packers’ receiver room. After drafting him in April 2025, Packers GM Brian Gutekunst said Williams needed development as a route runner even though his physical tools stood out immediately.

Williams has traits fantasy managers chase late in drafts. He ran a 4.48-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine despite carrying a bigger frame than most WRs. At TCU, he lined up all over the field. Back in 2024, during his college season, he caught 60 passes for 611 yards and six TDs while adding 322 rushing yards and six more scores on the ground.

Matt LaFleur also made the Packers' vision clear after the 2025 NFL Draft.

“He’ll be a movable chess piece that we can find different ways to put him in advantageous situations for us to get him the football,” LaFleur said during his post-draft media availability in Green Bay.

That role becomes even more valuable now. Tucker Kraft appears to be progressing well in his recovery, but Williams still gives the Packers another dangerous playmaker around Jordan Love. Green Bay already trusts him in motion packages and designed touches, and his mix of size and speed brings a different element to the offense. If that role continues to grow in 2026, Williams could become a real problem for defenses.

Still, the path exists now. More opportunity, a respected new receivers coach, and Green Bay’s creative offense give Williams a legitimate chance to outperform expectations and become one of fantasy football’s sneakiest breakout names in 2026.
