Warren Moon was born in Los Angeles, California and attended Alexander Hamilton High School. Moon was using a different address in order to be able to go this school due to its better academics and athletics.
Moon knew he had a good arm to throw the football growing up, so he wanted to play quarterback for his school. He did not get the opportunity as much until he began getting snaps in his junior year. When he was a senior, Moon led his team to the playoffs and was selected to the All-City Team in Los Angeles.
Despite having the obvious talent to go to a big school, Moon went to West Los Angeles College for his first year. Though his game still impressed at West Los Angeles, few other schools were interested in recruiting him. One of the few schools was Washington University.
The Huskies’ record was not impressive in Moon’s first two seasons there, having 11 wins and 11 losses. In his senior year, however, Moon helped lead his team to a Rose Bowl victory. He threw for 1,772 yards and had 12 passing touchdowns.
Moon was heard to be a late-round pick in the NFL Draft, so he decided to play in the Canadian Football League before trying to make an NFL team
Moon was drafted by the Edmonton Eskimos in the CFL. He would end up playing six seasons with the Eskimos and helped them become Grey Cup winners for five straight years. Moon’s CFL Career totals consisted of 21,228 yards passing and 144 touchdowns thrown.
He was inducted into the CFL Hall of Fame for his great performance in the league.
After finishing his time in Edmonton, Moon was signed by the Houston Oilers in 1984. Though his team had a rough season his first year there only winning three games, Moon would break the franchise record for passing yards in his first season and throw for 3,338 yards.
In the 1989 Season, Moon signed a 10 million dollar contract to stay with Houston, the biggest contract ever at the time. The following year, Moon would throw for 4,689 passing yards and 33 touchdowns, leading the league in both categories. Moon would go on to lead the passing yards again the following year when he threw for 4,690 yards.
After playing 17 years of football in the NFL, Moon retired at the age of 44. Some of his accolades include being a nine-time Pro Bowl selection, the franchise record holder for passing yards and passing touchdowns, and a Hall of Fame selection in both the NFL and CFL.
