Matthew Golden
The Green Bay Packers rarely spend first-round picks on wide receivers. The team has drafted just three wide receivers in the first round since 1988. The latest of those three is 2025 NFL Draft pick Matthew Golden from the University of Texas.
Golden started his college career at the University of Houston. He spent two seasons there and had 988 yards and 13 touchdowns in 20 games. His next 16 college games came at the University of Texas, where he had 987 yards and an SEC-leading nine receiving touchdowns. The Packers selected him with the 23rd overall pick in the first NFL Draft held in Green Bay.
Before Golden, there was a 23-year gap between receivers selected in the first round by the Packers. Javon Walker was the Packers' first-round pick in 2002. He played seven seasons in the NFL, but failed to be a real impact player for the team. Before him, the Packers' last first-round receiver was Sterling Sharpe, who was just inducted into the Hall of Fame.
The Packers already have plenty of talented young receivers. That, paired with the fact that they went against their normal draft tendencies, speaks volumes about what the team thinks of Golden. He figures to be a key player for the team as a rookie.
Even though Golden is a rare first-round receiver for the Packers, he still checks all the boxes the Packers look for in their players. First and foremost, he is a tremendous athlete, which is a trait the Packers covet in all of their players. He ran a 4.29-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine, which was the second fastest time overall, and the fastest among receivers.
Along with athleticism, the Packers target character. Golden’s character was on full display right after he was drafted. While he moved to Green Bay to start his NFL career, he made sure that his family in Houston was taken care of. He partnered with REMAX to buy his grandmother a house in Houston.
He originally planned to buy back the home his family lost in 2017. However, he instead bought a new home for his grandmother, making sure to take care of those who helped him reach the NFL.
Golden has high expectations after the Packers broke a long drought to select him. However, the new Packers receiver has everything it takes to be a successful NFL receiver.
