LeRoy Butler’s Early Career

Butler was born in Jacksonville, Florida where he attended Robert E. Lee High School. Butler was faced wit physical problems as a child which forced him to wear leg braces and use a wheelchair at times. However, Butler still managed to have a successful high school career and wet on to play college football at Florida State University.

At Florida State Butler was a three-year starter. He totaled 194 tackles and nine interceptions during his time there. His 1989 season ended with him earning Consensus All-American honors. He was selected by the Green Bay Packers in the second round of the 1990 NFL Draft.

LeRoy Butler Was an Integral Part of the Packers Success in the 1990’s

LeRoy Butler was the No. 48 overall selection in the NFL Draft. As a rookie Butler was not a starter, but still recorded three interceptions and one forced fumble. In 1991 he established himself as a starter. Butler started every game he played in for the rest of his career.

Butler recorded 38 interceptions in his 12-year NFL career. He earned his first Pro Bowl selection in 1993. It was his first of four Pro Bowl selections. 1994 was also the first of his four First Team All-Pro selections.

From 1996-1998 Butler earned three consecutive Pro Bowl nods and First Team All-Pro selections. Butler was a key piece in the Packers back to back Super Bowl appearances. Butler and the Packers won Super Bowl XXXI against the New England Patriots.

Butler recorded 889 tackles during his 12 seasons as a Packer. Butler earned a spot on the NFL All-1990’s Team.

LeRoy Butler’s Legacy

LeRoy Butler was one of the best players of his time. As a result, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2022. Butler was inducted into Florida State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2001. He was inducted into the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame in 2007.

Three Hall of Fame inductions are just a start of the legacy Butler has created. Butler started a tradition that has become a staple of the Green Bay Packers. Butler forced a fumble against the Raiders in 1993 which was recovered by Reggie White. Butler took a lateral from White to the end zone and spontaneously leaped into the stands.

Ever since, the Lambeau Leap has become a tradition for the Packers at the legendary Lambeau Field. Butler is also making an impact off the field with his Butler vs. Bullying campaign.
