Green Bay Packers Defensive Tackle Kenny Clark Succeeds No Matter Who the Defensive Coordinator Is

There is no current player on the Green Bay Packers roster that has been on the team as long as three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kenny Clark. A first round pick in 2016, Clark has become one of the premier defensive tackles in the NFL. Amazingly, he has accomplished so much despite the fact that he will now be playing for his fourth defensive coordinator in Jeff Hafley.

But that is nothing new for the Packers’ star.

Kenny Clark Played for Three Defensive Coordinators While Playing at UCLA

Before being drafted by the Packers in the 2016 NFL Draft, Clark played his college ball at UCLA for legendary head coach Jim Mora. However, he did not have the same defensive coordinator in any of his three seasons in college.

In 2013, Clark played in 11 games as a true freshman and recorded 29 total tackles. He had four tackles for loss and a single sack. The defensive coordinator that season was Lou Spanos.

The next season, 2014, saw Jeff Ulbrich hired as UCLA’s defensive coordinator. Clark played in 13 games and recorded 58 total tackles, including 5.5 tackles for loss.

In his final year at UCLA, 2015, Clark was coached by new defensive coordinator Tom Bradley. He had his best collegiate season, recording 68 total tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, and six sacks.

Kenny Clark Will Be Playing for His Fourth Defensive Coordinator with the Green Bay Packers

When the Packers made Clark the 27th overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, the defense was led by defensive coordinator Dom Capers. As a rookie, Clark played all 16 games, starting two, and recorded 21 total tackles.

The next season, still with Capers leading the defense, Clark became the Packers’ starting defensive tackle. He responded to the promotion with a highly productive second season, recording 55 tackles and 4.5 sacks.

2018 saw Mike Pettine take over as the defensive coordinator of the Packers. Clark was limited to 13 games that season (all starts), but still set a career high with 6.0 sacks. The following year, 2019, Clark made his first career Pro Bowl after recording 62 tackles and matching his career high of 6.0 sacks.
Two seasons later, in 2021, the Packers hired Joe Barry as their new defensive coordinator. Despite yet another change, Clark continued to demonstrate that he was one of the best players in the NFL at his position. He made his second career Pro Bowl while recording 48 tackles and 4.0 sacks.

This past year, 2023, saw Clark have his most productive season as a pass rusher. He had a career high 7.5 sacks and was named to his third Pro Bowl.

New Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley will be the fourth coach to hold that title since Clark came to Green Bay. Based on his production under the previous three, however, there is no reason to doubt that he will continue his dominance.
