Keisean Nixon’s Early Years with the Las Vegas Raiders
Green Bay Packers cornerback Keisean Nixon sees himself as a cornerback first. His commitment to excellence on defense is a display of the work ethic and tenacity that led him to the NFL in the first place. An undrafted free agent in 2019 after playing his college ball at Arizona Western and South Carolina, Nixon was given a shot in the NFL by the Las Vegas Raiders who signed him as an undrafted free agent.
In three seasons with the Raiders, Nixon played primarily special teams where special teams coordinator and interim head coach Rich Bisaccia grew to view him as one of his favorite players. When Bisaccia left the Raiders organization to become the special teams coordinator of the Packers, he convinced the front office to go out and get Nixon, who was a free agent.
Keisean Nixon Found a New Role with the Green Bay Packers
Midway through his first season with Packers in 2022, Nixon took over as Green Bay’s kick returner, a role that he had not played in three seasons with the Raiders.
Nixon was an immediate success, leading the NFL kickoff returns (35) and kickoff return yards (1,009) despite not holding the kick returner job from the start of the season. For his efforts, he was named First-Team All-Pro.
In 2023, Nixon returned to Green Bay as their starting nickel back and kick returner. He once again led the NFL in kickoff returns (30) and kickoff return yards (782), as well as yards per return (26.1). He was named First-Team All-Pro for a second consecutive season.
Nixon’s success as the Packers kick returner has not taken away from his defense either. In his first season with Green Bay, he set career highs with 23 tackles, two passes defended, and an interception.
Last season, having earned a starting job on defense for the first time in his career, Nixon put his full potential on display. He set new career highs with 80 tackles, six passes defended, and three forced fumbles. Nixon also had a key interception against the eventual Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs and Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes.
A New NFL Rule Change Could Mean Big Things for Green Bay Packers All-Pro Keisean Nixon
The NFL has recently changed their kickoff rules in an effort to make them more exciting and meaningful. Going forward, teams that are kicking off will not be able to run down the field until the returner touches the ball.
Due to Nixon’s great speed and return ability, he can take advantage of this new rule and become an even more dominant threat to change the course of football games.
Some media members began to chatter that this rule change could lead to Nixon landing in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. When asked if he saw this as a road to Canton, he said, “Truthfully, honestly, no. Because honestly the kick return stuff is just something I can do naturally. I’ve always been a cornerback, so me doing the kick return is just an added boost that I bring to my team.”
