Green Bay Packers: Jordan Love Is Making History for the NFL’s Most Historic Franchise

Jordan Love Lost His Father at a Young Age

Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love has always been faced with doubts and challenges. He has been able to meet these situations head-on with a strength and fortitude that is rare even among professional athletes. It is an intrapersonal skill that he developed at a young age.

Love was born on November 2, 1998 in Bakersfield, California to Orbin Jr. and Anna Love. Both of his parents were law enforcement officers. Love enjoyed a healthy relationship with both of his parents and was especially close to his father.

Unfortunately, Orbin Jr. suffered from adverse side effects from a new medication he was taking and took his own life when Jordan was just 14 years old. Love wanted to give up football at that point in his life, but his mother encouraged him to keep going.

Jordan Love Played Quarterback at Utah State

Love received just one Division I scholarship out of high school. That offer came from Utah State, so he committed to playing for the Aggies.

He redshirted his first year and then, as a freshman in 2017, appeared in 12 games and started the first six. He completed 129 of his 235 passing attempts for 1,631 yards, eight touchdowns, and six interceptions.

As the full-time starter in 2018, Love had one of the best seasons by a quarterback in the entire country. He completed 64% of his passes for 3,567 yards, 32 touchdowns, and just six interceptions. Love was named the game MVP of the New Mexico Bowl after throwing for 359 yards and four touchdowns. It was this season that cemented his future as a future first round pick in the NFL Draft.

In his final collegiate season, Love faced more challenges on the field. He was playing for a new head coach, his third offensive coordinator in three seasons, and many of his teammates from his stellar 2018 season had graduated. Love completed 61.9% of his passes for 3,402 yards with 20 touchdowns and 17 interceptions.

Despite having another season of eligibility remaining, he decided to enter the 2020 NFL Draft.

Jordan Love Was Drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the First Round of the 2020 NFL Draft

The NFL world and Packers fans were shocked to their core when Green Bay traded up in the first round and took Love with the 26th overall pick. The message the pick sent was clear: he was going to eventually take over as the starting quarterback of the Packers, a job that future Pro Football Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers held at the time.

As with other stages in his life, this new chapter brought its own kind of challenges. Like Rodgers before him, Love was put under a microscope and often criticized by fans and media. Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic forced much of his rookie experiences that offseason to be held virtually as opposed to in-person. Furthermore, Green Bay decided to stash him on their practice squad for the 2020 season.

Jordan Love Became Aaron Rodgers’ Backup Quarterback on the Green Bay Packers

Following the 2020 season, the Packers made Love their second-string quarterback. He worked closely with head coach Matt LaFleur, quarterbacks coach Tom Clements, and Rodgers himself to improve his footwork and awareness.

Midway through the 2021 season, Rodgers tested positive for COVID and was forced to miss a game. As a result, Love made his first NFL start against the Kansas City Chiefs, completing 19 of 34 passes for 190 yards, a touchdown, and an interception.

In 2022, Love again served as Rodgers’ backup. During the Packers’ Week 12 game against the Philadelphia Eagles, Rodgers was forced to exit the contest with a rib injury. Despite the fact that Green Bay was losing by a wide margin, Love made it an exciting contest. He completed six of his nine passing attempts for 113 yards and a touchdown.

A few days after the game, Eagles star cornerback Darius Slay was quoted as saying, “Green Bay has a bright, bright future, because buddy was slinging it.”

Jordan Love Became the Starting Quarterback of the Green Bay Packers in 2023

Following the 2022, the Packers felt it was time to hand over the reins of the offense to Jordan Love. They traded Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets and named Love their starting quarterback.

Despite the questions and doubts that surrounded him and his team, Love persevered through his team’s rough 2-5 start. In the season’s final 10 games, Love led the Packers to a 7-3 record while completing 68% of his passes with 21 touchdowns compared to just three interceptions.

Overall, Love completed 64.2% of his passes for 4,159 yards, 32 touchdowns, 11 interceptions, and a passer rating of 96.1. These numbers were better than either Rodgers’ or Brett Favre’s in their own first seasons as the Packers’ starting quarterback:

Quarterback Completion % Yards Touchdowns Interceptions Passer Rating
Jordan Love 64.2% 4,159 32 11 96.1
Aaron Rodgers 63.6% 4,038 28 13 93.8
Brett Favre 64.1% 3,227 18 13 85.3

Not only did Love experience great regular season success in his first year as the Packers’ starting quarterback, he also led Green Bay to an upset victory over the Dallas Cowboys in the Wild Card round of the NFL Playoffs.

In that game, Love completed 16 of 21 passes for 272 yards and three touchdowns.

Despite the Packers’ loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the Divisional Round the next week, Love had accomplished a great deal during his first season as their starting quarterback, especially proving that he is indeed the future of the franchise.
