James Jones was born in San Jose, California and attended Gunderson High School. Jones was active in three sports at his school: football, basketball and track.
Jones played quarterback for his school but transitioned to wide receiver when he committed to play football locally at San Jose State.
Jones only saw the ball come to his hands once his freshman year for nine yards. In his sophomore season, he became a bigger role player for San Jose State. He grabbed 25 catches for 317 yards and one score.
His junior year was nearly the same. He finished with 30 catches for 278 yards and one score. In his senior year, Jones became the number one option for his team. He finished with 70 receptions for 893 yards and 10 touchdowns. He was nominated second-team All-WAC.
Jones would go on to be drafted in the 3rd round as the 78th overall pick by the Green Bay Packers
Jones spent most of his NFL career with the Green Bay Packers. His first year in the league, Jones finished with 676 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Jones would go on to play eight years with Packers, including returning for one season after being gone for a year to the Oakland Raiders. Jones was a key member of the Packers Super Bowl run in the 2010 season.
He caught touchdowns in both the Wild Card and Divisional round victories for the Packers. In the divisional round against the Falcons he caught four passes for 75 yards as well.
In 2012, Jones put up 14 touchdowns, which tied for first for touchdowns in that season.
He would go on to have solid seasons, having over 635 yards every year after the 2011 season. Jones announced his retirement in 2017, his final season having been with the Packers. He has since begun a career in broadcasting, appearing on NFL Network.
