Green Bay Packers defensive end Rashan Gary was born in Plainfield, New Jersey. Gary played high school football at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School and Paramus Catholic High School, playing at the latter school in his final two high school seasons.
Gary became the top high school recruit after a phenomenal senior season. He became the third ever consensus No. 1 recruit. He was ranked as the top recruit by the four major publications, ESPN, 24/7 Sports, Rivals, and Scout. Jadeveon Clowney and Robert Nkemdiche were the only others to achieve the feat.
Gary recorded 13.5 sacks, 55 tackles, 29 tackles for a loss as a senior. He was named USA TODAY Defensive Player of the Year.
The nation’s top recruit committed to the University of Michigan in February 2016. As a freshman Gary struggled to find the field. He recorded just 27 tackles and 1.0 sack.
However, in 2017, as a sophomore, he had a breakout year for the Wolverines. Gary put together a 6.0 sack season with 65 total tackles. He also recorded 12 tackles for a loss. Conference coaches named him to the All-Big Ten defensive team, and the Associated Press named to the All-Big Ten second team.
In 2018, Gary’s final year at the University of Michigan, his production was listed by a shoulder injury. He still accumulated 38 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, and 3.5 sacks. Gary decided to forego his final collegiate season en route to becoming a first round pick in the NFL draft.
The Green Bay Packers selected Rashan Gary with the 12th overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. The pick came as a shock to many as the Packers signed pass rushers Preston Smith and Za’Darius Smith in the same offseason.
Playing behind two veterans, Gary had every opportunity to learn and grow. Despite limited playing time, he was able to record 21 tackles, three tackles for loss, and 2.0 sacks.
In 2020, Gary’s playing time and production increased. Playing 48% of defensive snaps, he logged 35 tackles, 5.0 sacks, and five tackles for loss.
In 2021 Gary stepped into the spotlight. After a season long injury to Za’Darius Smith Gary became a starter. Starting all 16 games, Gary had a career-high 9.5 sacks, 4 tackles, and 11 tackles for loss.
He picked up right where he left off in 2022 and had 6.0 sacks through nine games. Unfortunately, his season ended early with a torn ACL. However, the Packers had seen enough to make Gary one of the highest paid players at his position. The Packers signed him to a four-year, $96 million deal, the fifth-largest deal for any defensive end in the NFL.
Gary worked hard to rehab his injury and was able to get back on the field in time for the 2023 regular season. Packers coaches brought him along slowly, limiting the number of snaps he played in each game early on. However, he eventually was allowed to carry his usual workload and ended up with 44 tackles, 9.0 sacks, and seven tackles for loss. Gary was voted as No. 50 on the NFL Top 100 players list.
