Gilbert Brown

Gilbert Brown High School Career

Gilbert Brown was born outside Detroit in Farmington, Michigan. When he was in high school, he attended a high school closer to the heart of Detroit, Mackenzie High School, which has since been closed.

In his high school career, Brown played the defensive line position due to his dominant weight and size. He racked up 189 tackles and 19 sacks in high school and received all state honors. He graduated in 1989 and committed to the University of Kansas to play football.

Brown was a Dominant Force in College

Brown came to Kansas as a 6’2 315-pound nose tackle as a freshman. His game began to get more notice in his second year, where he was labeled “co-defensive player of the year” and was also awarded the 2nd team All-Big-Eight conference.

In his junior year, Brown led the way for the Jayhawks’ defense. He finished second in sacks, tackles for loss, and fumbles recovered.

After his senior season, Brown finished with a well-rounded college career at Kansas. He finished with 168 total tackles, which tied for 6th in school history for a lineman. He also finished 5th in tackles for loss with 30 and had 7.5 career sacks.

Brown would go on to be drafted in the third round as the 79th overall pick in the 1993 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings

A Slow Start Didn’t Stop Brown in the NFL

Though he was one of the earlier picks in the 3rd round of the draft, the Vikings seemed to have concerns early on with Brown. He had gained 40 pounds since his first year at Kansas. At the final roster cutdowns of the 1993 season, Brown was released by the Vikings but was picked up quickly by the Green Bay Packers.

After only playing in two games his rookie season, then having lingering injuries in the 1994-95 season, Brown came back strong in his fourth season. Surrounded by a stacked defense line group, Brown found his role with the team and started all 16 games that season. He had a careerhigh 51 total tackles in that season. Brown was a member of the Packers 1996 Super Bowl team that defeated the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXI.

He played two other full 16-game seasons in 1998 and 1989 but did not play in the 2000 season due to a failed contract renewal with the Packers. After they settled the contract in the following year, Brown played two more good seasons before having another severe injury that kept him out of the season.

He finished his career with 292 total tackles and 7 sacks. He also is 4th on the team in career playoff games for the Packers.

Since he retired from the NFL, Brown started the Gilbert-Brown Foundation which focuses on helping kids in the inner city as well as other medically focused benefits for children. He wanted to give back to the community in some way; his foundation helps 156 different children’s charities in Wisconsin.
