Cecil Cooper
The Milwaukee Brewers' lone World Series appearance came in 1982. However, it is hard to imagine their success that season without Cecil Cooper.
Cooper may be most remembered as a Brewer, but his career started with the Boston Red Sox. In 1968, the Red Sox selected him, and he made his debut in 1972 as a 21-year-old.
Cooper did not spend a full season playing for the Red Sox until 1974, when he played 121 games. That season, he hit .275 and smashed eight home runs. In the following two seasons, he would hit 29 home runs.
Those two seasons would be his last with the Red Sox. He helped lead the Red Sox to the World Series in 1975. He had started to show flashes of being a very productive player, but the team traded him to the Milwaukee Brewers for George Scott and Bernie Carbo.
Cooper really made a name for himself with the Brewers. In his first season, he hit .300 and hit a career high, at that point, 20 home runs. He was once again productive in 1978, but in 1979, he was named an All-Star for the first time.
He led the American League in doubles that season, won a Gold Glove and had an .872 OPS. As good as he was that year, he may have been even better the next season. He hit 25 home runs and led the league in RBIs. He also hit .352 with a .926 OPS. He won his first Silver Slugger as well.
Cooper was an All-Star once again in Milwaukee’s magical 1982 season. He smashed 321 home runs, which ended up being a single-season career high for him. The Brewers failed to win the World Series, but Cooper cemented his legacy in Milwaukee.
Cooper finished out his career with the Brew Crew. He was an All-Star a total of five times with the team. He won three Silver Sluggers and two Gold Gloves as well.
After his playing career was over, Cooper managed the Astros. He took over in 2007 and managed the team until nearly the end of the 2009 season. In 2007, he was elected to the Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame.
