Brett Favre was born in Gulfport, Mississippi. He played high school football at Hancock North Central High School. Favre’s high school head coach was none other than his father, Irvin Favre. While Favre had a great arm his father ran the wishbone offense so his talent was not on full display.
However, Favre received one lone offer to play college football. He accepted his only offer from the University of Southern Mississippi.
When Favre arrived at Southern Mississippi the coaching staff wanted him to play defensive back. However, Favre wanted to play quarterback. He began the season buried on the depth chart, but eventually got his opportunity.
Favre threw for over 1,100 yards as a freshman with 15 touchdowns. He remained the starting quarterback for four seasons at Southern Mississippi. He threw for 7,695 yards and 52 touchdowns. When Favre graduated he was the all time leading passer in yards and touchdowns. His record stood until Austin Davis broke both marks in 2008.
While his time at Southern Mississippi was nothing short of historic, what he would do in the NFL would proved to be even more extraordinary.
Favre was selected in the second round of the 1991 NFL draft by the Atlanta Falcons, where he spent one season as a backup. He was traded to the Packers, and became the starter early in the 1992 season. Favre becoming the starter marked a historic run of success for the franchise after a decline from the dominance it held in the 1960’s.
Favre became known for his one-liners and joyous way of playing the game. He also became known as one of the toughest players to ever play in the NFl. His 297 consecutive starts is the most by any player ever.
Favre threw for 71,838 and 508 touchdowns over the course of his 20 year career. Favre spent 16 years in Green Bay, where he led the team two consecutive Super Bowls, winning once. He would play one season for the New York Jets and two seasons for the Minnesota Vikings.
At the time of his retirement, Favre was the NFL leader in passing yards, passing touchdowns, and quarterback wins. Favre won three consecutive NFL MVP Awards from 1995 to 1997. Favre also received 11 Pro Bowl and three first-team All-Pro selections. He was inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2016. Favre’s legacy was cemented in Green Bay when his number was retired on Thanksgiving in 2015.
