On Tuesday, April 12 we had a great time at the 5th annual Wisconsin Sports Awards put on by Good Karma Brands at The American Club in Kohler, Wisc.

The stars were out including Packers QB Brett Hundley, WR Ty Montgomery, Mike Daniels, Badger and NFL hopeful Joe Schobert, Bo Ryan and Barry Alvarez.  Some very talented professional athletes received awards that were much deserved, including our friend Mike Daniels, who won Professional Athlete of the Year.

Our friend Ty Montgomery being interviewed by ESPN's Jason Wilde

Daniels just earned a huge four-year contract extension with the Green Bay Packers that many fans are excited about, to say the least. In the 2015-16 season, Daniels had a total of 27 tackles, four sacks, one interception and one forced fumble.  He is a key player on the Packers’ defense.

My wife and I with our very talented friend, Mr. Daniels.

We want to thank the Wisconsin Sports Awards again for such a great and well put together event, we hope to see you next year!

During a recent interview on the show "Highly Questionable", our friend and partner James Jones talked about his struggles with homelessness as a child and how it has inspired him today to not only stay humble as one of the top wide receivers in the league,  but also to start his own non-profit foundation.

Love Jones 4 Kids Foundation was started by Jones and his wife, Tamika. The mission of the foundation is to "enrich the lives of children living in disadvantaged and underserved communities by conducting and sponsoring a variety of programs to help young people overcome obstacles, stay in school and prepare for challenges in life."

Jones also shared a romantic, yet semi-humorous story while on the show. He shared the story of his proposal to his wife. It took place at one of her favorite restaurants, Red Lobster. Jones went to the restaurant the day before he popped the question to set the proposal up. The next night when they were out for dinner, not only did Tamika's favorite delicious cheddar biscuits get served to their table, but along came a diamond ring with Tamika's name on it!

Packers Jeff Janis Hail Mary

Now that America knows Jeff Janis' name, you will find he is a Green Bay Packer through and through. The Packer Way means Humble, Educated and Team First, Individual Achievements a Distant Second. If you haven't met Jeff Janis, you are in for a treat as he loves to play football and just wants to help his team win. Catching HailMary2 this season couldn't have happened to a nicer and team oriented player. We are very proud to work with him.

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- When the Green Bay Packers signed James Jones the week of the regular-season opener, it knocked Jeff Janis down a peg on the depth chart at receiver.

Jones immediately became Aaron Rodgers’ No. 3 receiver, and Janis could barely get off the bench.

As productive as Jones was at various times this season (he had eight touchdowns and a career-high 890 yards), Saturday’s 26-20 NFC divisional playoff loss to the Arizona Cardinals showed Jones’ limitations and once again brought up one of the most popular questions of the season: Should Janis play more?

For all of Janis’ flaws -- his hands aren’t the greatest and his route-running skills are unrefined, as was evident again Saturday when he and Rodgers were on different pages on a throw to the end zone in the second quarter -- he gets open.

Yet he played only 132 snaps in the regular season and just four in last weekend’s wild-card playoff win over the Washington Redskins. His only two catches this season came in Week 6.

On Saturday, with Davante Adams inactive because of the knee injury he sustained in Washington combined with the chest injury Randall Cobb sustained in the first quarter against the Cardinals, the Packers had no choice but to play Janis along with Jones and Jared Abbrederis. They were the only three receivers the Packers had left.

Sure enough, Janis produced.

Seven catches, 145 yards and two touchdowns later, Janis strengthened the argument that he should have been playing all along. His 4.42-second 40-yard dash speed and 6-foot-3 size gave the Packers something they could never replicate after Jordy Nelson blew out his knee in the preseason.

But the Packers mostly ignored Janis all season. Before Saturday, Rodgers was just 2-of-11 with an interception while targeting Janis in his two-year career.

“He’s taken advantage of some opportunities, and he’s just a young man who needs to play,” McCarthy said Saturday after the game. “He’s got a lot of raw ability. He made some huge, huge plays tonight.”

Not only did Janis remarkably have two catches for 101 yards on the final drive of regulation, including an improbable 41-yard touchdown as time expired, he also caught an 8-yard touchdown in the third quarter that put the Packers ahead 13-7.

“We felt pretty confident that anybody in our room could step up,” Janis said. “It’s unfortunate when someone gets hurt. When your time comes, you’ve just got to step in and act like you’ve been there.”

Here’s a breakdown of the offensive performance in Saturday’s season-ending loss:

Total offensive plays: 73

Receivers

Notes: Cobb spent the night in an Arizona hospital after he sustained a chest injury in the first quarter. With Patrick Peterson covering him, Jones was shut out on only two targets (including one Rodgers bounced to him on fourth down on the second-to-last series of regulation). It was the third time in 18 games this season Jones was held without a catch, and he had three other games this season with only one catch.

Quarterbacks

  • Aaron Rodgers: 73

Notes: Rodgers’ 41-yard touchdown to Janis was his second successful Hail Mary attempt of the season. He was 2-of-3 on Hail Mary tries this season. The rest of the NFL was 3-of-10, according to ESPN Stats & Information. It was his second completion on a pass thrown 40 or more yards downfield on that drive. He had only three such completions all season before Saturday.

Running backs

Notes: Lacy had 75 of his 89 yards on consecutive carries in the third quarter to set up Janis’ first touchdown. Lacy averaged just 1.4 yards on his other 10 carries. Starks had just 23 yards on seven carries.

Tight ends

Notes: Rodgers was targeted eight times and had five catches for 45 yards.

Offensive line

  • David Bakhtiari: 73
  • Bryan Bulaga: 73
  • Josh Sitton: 73
  • T.J. Lang: 73

Brett Hundley made a name for himself this preseason after he was selected by the Green Bay Packers during the 5th round of the 2015 NFL Draft.

The rookie quarterback from UCLA had the second most leading passing yards, throwing a total of 630 passing yards during the preseason and completing 45 out of 65 attempted passes. He also had seven touchdowns, more than any other QB in the league during the preseason.

After tackling his first preseason as a Green Bay Packer, Hundley is now heading up to the Upper Peninsula to help tackle hunger.

On Tuesday, October 27,  Mayfield Sports Marketing and Brett Hundley made their way up to Elmer's County Market in Escanaba, MI, where Hundley would be signing autographs for the price of only a food donation to go towards a great cause.

Escanaba Public Safety and the Green Bay Packers joined forces and put on a food drive to help support the community foundation’s “Feed the Kids” backpack program.

There are five schools that participate in the backpack program and who will be receiving the donations of food. The donations will then get passed on to needy and underprivileged youth, to help carry them through weekends and extended breaks from school, when they may not be getting fed as much as they do on a school day.

The food drive at the county market was held from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m., with Hundley making his appearance at 6 p.m. and staying until 7:30 p.m.

With the help of Escanaba Public Safety, the Green Bay Packers, Elmer's County Market, Brett Hundley, and a very special thanks to Detective Tony LaPant, the food drive was a huge success, and far exceeded last year's event. Thank you to everyone who came out and made this event possible!

Packer back Lacy speaks of the power of prayer in Carthage visit for An Evening With Eddie Lacy

Green Bay Packers running back Eddy Lacy addresses the crowd at Carthage College on Friday night.

It’s hard to say what goes through Eddie Lacy’s head as the Green Bay Packers running back charges through obstacles standing between him and the end zone.

Even he admits to not knowing that guy on the field.

“I’m trying to figure out who he is, too,” Lacy laughed as he spoke to a crowd of about 300 fans at Carthage College Friday night. “I don’t know what the switch is that makes me go from who I am to who I am on the field, because it’s so not my personality.”

Friday’s fundraiser for Outreach Hope Ministries was presented by the Greater Milwaukee Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

In his appearance at Carthage College, Lacy spoke about his faith and how it kept him going when his family was displaced from their New Orleans area home following Hurricane Katrina.

Listening to him talk about those years, the audience began to get a sense as to why the otherwise mild-mannered, jovial 24-year-old has no problem overcoming challenges in his path.

Long and winding road

Lacy, who hails from Geismar, La., about an hour west of New Orleans, was in ninth grade when Hurricane Katrina hit. His family evacuated the area the day before the storm, but their home was destroyed.

“We took what we could from the house, but for the most part there was nothing,” Lacy recalled. His family found temporary housing through a home sharing program before eventually relocating to a small trailer.

“Nothing was the same,” Lacy recalled. “Before Katrina, I had your typical kid life, but then that all changed.”

The next three years Lacy describes as “a real dark place. The only thing I succeeded at during that time was football.”

Then, one night, Lacy’s mom came into his room crying.

“She began to tell me everything I was feeling and thinking,” Lacy said. “But the thing is, I’m someone who is really guarded with my emotions, so I was puzzled how she knew these things.”

When she was done speaking, Lacy’s mom turned and left the room. It was then that he realized how his mother knew the challenges and emotions he was battling.

Starting to believe

“My mom prays a lot. She prays for me so much,” he said. “And that is when I really started to believe I had a chance. I could do something more. Without that moment, I probably wouldn’t be where I am today.”

There’s no hiding Lacy’s gratitude for his parents (last fall, he made good on his promise to buy them a house), or the power of prayer his mother instilled in him. For other young people experiencing a dark place, Lacy left them with this advice.

“Your parents, they’re there for you no matter what. So let’s start there,” he said. “And it’s prayer. There’s definitely power in prayer. And I learned that the night my mom talked to me.”

He also learned dark times are meant to visit, not stay.

“Those times are building you up for what’s to come in the future,” he said. “And I think that’s what prayer and your parents help you with.”
