The play came against the Raiders at Lambeau Field. Raiders quarterback Jeff Hostetler flipped a short pass to Randy Jordan. Butler closed fast. He forced the fumble. DE Reggie White scooped the ball and lateralled it back. Butler sprinted 25 yards untouched for the score.

Then he did not look for teammates. He ran straight to the south end zone wall and jumped into the stands. Fans pulled him in. The Packers won 28-0 and clinched their first playoff berth in a non-strike season in more than 20 years.

Butler later said the moment felt natural. During a 2003 interview reflecting on the play, he explained that the energy from fans waiting at the wall created a rush he never felt again inside Lambeau. Years later, during his Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrinement speech on Aug. 6, 2022, in Canton, Ohio, he reminded everyone what Green Bay means. “I don’t go and say hello to fans at Pick ’n Save, I say hello to owners,” he said, highlighting the franchise’s unique community ownership.

Butler backed the celebration with elite production. He played 12 seasons with the Green Bay Packers from 1990 to 2001. He finished with 38 interceptions, 20.5 sacks and 889 tackles. The 1993 season also brought his first AP All-Pro honor. Teammate Robert Brooks later made the Leap routine, but Butler created it.
