Less than 800 people reside in Convent, Louisiana, the county seat of St. James Parish and the hometown of one of the NFL’s best wide receivers. Jarvis Landry is proof that big things can come out of small packages. At Lutcher High School, he had a stellar career, being named the fourth best wide receiver in the country as well as lettering in track for his work as a long jumper.
As a five star recruit, Landry had numerous offers but chose to take his talents to LSU, where he played on the 2011 SEC championship team. His junior year, he was named Second Team All-SEC. He decided to enter the NFL draft after three seasons and was taken by the Miami Dolphins in the second round.
Landry’s career with the Dolphins and the Cleveland Browns (having signed prior to the 2018 season) has been outstanding. Named to the Professional Football Writers Association All-Rookie Team his first year, he led the NFL in receptions by his fourth year in the league. In five years, he has amassed 481 receptions, the most in NFL history for any player in their first five seasons. A four time Pro Bowl player, Landry currently owns the ninth-longest streak in NFL history with 79 consecutive games with at least two receptions.
More importantly than football are Landry’s efforts to give back to the community. In 2015 and 2016, Landry hosted “Jarvis Landry’s Hometown Giveback” in Lutcher, LA, for disadvantaged youth in the area. During those events, Landry announced the formation of a scholarship for one graduating senior at his alma mater.
Landry has also been passionate about cystic fibrosis research. Every year, during the NFL’s “My Cause My Cleats” event, Landry has chosen to shine a light on CF funding and the search for a cure. Landry is active with the Make-A-Wish foundation.
