Is Moving On From Romeo Doubs the Right Move for the Packers?

The Green Bay Packers have beautifully built one of the NFL’s deepest wide receiver rooms. However, that depth is now forcing difficult decisions. As this season moves toward its final stretch, WR Romeo Doubs finds himself in the middle of weird speculation about Green Bay’s long-term plans. Latest updates allude that the Packers might be planning ahead without him, even though he's still performing well and staying healthy.

Per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Green Bay’s expected to part ways with Doubs once he reaches free agency. That projection gained traction after trade rumors surrounded Doubs ahead of the midseason deadline. While the Packers ultimately kept him, the direction of the roster and the financial picture paint a complicated reality.

The 25-year-old showed up game after game over the last four seasons, staying steady when called upon. Out of 64 chances in the regular season, Romeo Doubs played in 56 and took the field first in 47. His catches added up to 194 (gaining 2,278 yards), and he crossed the end zone 20 times. Coaches continued to believe in him, which speaks volumes about his day-in, day-out presence.

However, opportunities have never been scarce in Green Bay’s offense. Jayden Reed topped the squad in catch yardage two years straight. Meanwhile, Tucker Kraft looked set for a big leap, until an ACL tear cut his 2025 run short. Then came Christian Watson’s comeback in 2025, firing off gains downfield right away. Add to that first-round rookie Matthew Golden, and targets become harder to guarantee.

Romeo Doubs Remains Valuable Even As the Roster Shifts

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Romeo Doubs (87) fields a punt during the second quarter of their game against the Philadelphia Eagles Monday, November 10, 2025 at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Despite the uncertainty, Doubs’ value has not diminished. His early-season stretch demonstrated that he can operate as a primary option when needed, handling volume and defensive attention effectively. Though his role shifted now and then, he still got key plays in games while staying in the offense mix (proof that coaches kept believing in him).

Financial considerations may ultimately drive the decision. Spotrac projects Romeo Doubs' contract to be around four years and $48M. With the Packers already investing in Watson and committing draft capital to Golden, matching that price may not align with their roster-building strategy. That reality does not negate Doubs’ contributions, but it does explain the business logic behind the discussion.

If Green Bay walks away, Doubs could find his groove somewhere new. With solid stats, good play, and staying healthy, he’ll catch interest from teams looking to add firepower.

For the Packers, though, this situation’s less about failure and more about evolution. Doubs showed up consistently while the team reshuffled its attack. No matter if he sticks around in Green Bay or moves on, what he brought to the Packers' wins lately can't be ignored.
