Xavier McKinney recorded eight interceptions in his first season with the Green Bay Packers in 2024. He managed only two in 2025, raising questions about his impact. However, his coverage numbers told a different story. On Oct. 12, 2026, McKinney intercepted Chicago twice in Green Bay's 31-7 win, taking his season total to three.
Xavier McKinney's 2025 Numbers Told a Different Story
McKinney's interception total dropped in 2025, but his coverage improved. As per the Zone Coverage report, he allowed a career-low 56.3% completion rate, the seventh-lowest among 103 qualifying safeties.
He also ranked 10th in yards allowed per snap, setting a career best. His nine pass breakups showed that he continued to disrupt passing plays even when he did not intercept the ball.
McKinney's 31% forced incompletion rate led the league, according to the same report. No other player exceeded 24%. These amazing credentials sort of challenge the idea that McKinney had a poor season. His coverage made it harder for quarterbacks to complete passes, even when those plays did not produce interceptions.
Packers Safety Makes His Mark Against Chicago
McKinney made his impact visible again against the Bears on October 12. Green Bay won 31-7, and his two interceptions helped the defense control the game.
After the victory, McKinney explained the team's motivation to reporters.
“The last time we were in Lambeau, we did not put on a good performance,” he said. “We wanted to avenge ourselves. Show the world, our fans, the people in this building…that we are who we say we are.”
McKinney also became the first Packers player to record multiple interceptions in a game since Rudy Ford did so against Dallas in Week 10 of 2022, according to Zone Coverage.
With three interceptions in 2026, McKinney has already surpassed his entire total from last season. His latest performance reinforces a point his 2025 numbers already suggested: interceptions alone do not measure a safety's impact.
At 27, McKinney remains a key part of Green Bay's defense. His coverage statistics and strong start to 2026 show why the Packers can rely on him to disrupt opposing passing attacks.
