How Robin Yount’s Two MVP Awards and 20-Year Brewers Career Made Him a Milwaukee Baseball Icon

Robin Yount spent his entire 20-year MLB career with the Milwaukee Brewers. The star joined as an 18-year-old in 1974 and left in 1993 with 3,142 hits and two amazing American League MVP awards. Very few players have built such an impressive record with one franchise. Yount’s journey stands out because he won his MVP awards at two different positions. First as a shortstop and later as a center fielder.

His journey goes beyond a long career with a single team. The champ helped Milwaukee reach its first World Series in 1982. He found another peak seven years later. Those accolades made him one of the most important players in Brewers history.

Robin Yount’s 1982 MVP Season Put Milwaukee On the Baseball Map

Yount reached his first amazing milestone in 1982. He hit .331 with 29 home runs and 114 RBIs while leading the American League with 210 hits. His performance earned him the AL MVP award and helped Milwaukee win its first American League pennant. The Brewers then faced the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series.

No doubt, Milwaukee lost the series in seven games, but Yount still had an outstanding performance. He hit .414 with one home run, six RBIs, and six runs scored across the seven games. The World Series loss denied him a championship, but his season remains one of the defining chapters in Brewers history.

Yount has never won a World Series title, but his journey with Milwaukee rests on much more than a championship ring.

Yount’s career took a shocking turn after a shoulder injury forced him away from shortstop in 1985. After that, the veteran moved to center field and continued to produce at the plate. Rather than letting the change derail his career, he adapted and put together another MVP season.

In 1989, the champ hit .318 with 21 home runs and 103 RBIs. Then, he won his second AL MVP award. This made him one of the few special players to earn such an honor in different positions. His success at shortstop and center field reveals his ability to adjust without losing his impact as a hitter.

He reached another accolade in 1992. The legend collected his 3,000th MLB hit vs. the Cleveland Indians. And he finished his career after the 1993 season with 251 home runs, 1,406 RBIs and a .285 batting average.

The Baseball HOF inducted Yount in 1999 in his first year of eligibility. The Brewers also retired his No. 19 jersey, recognizing his contribution to the franchise.
