How Robin Yount’s Historic 1982 MVP Season Changed the Story of the Milwaukee Brewers

Robin Yount was on a tear in 1982. The Milwaukee Brewers shortstop seemed to have an answer for every pitcher he faced, and the numbers backed it up. He racked up 210 hits, scored 129 runs, and helped Milwaukee punch its ticket to the World Series for the first time. Then, on Nov. 9, 1982, the big individual honor followed. Yount won the American League MVP award, capping off a season that put him in a league of his own.

Yount was racking up numbers all over the place. He finished the season with a .331 batting average, 46 doubles and 210 hits. He also led the major leagues with 367 total bases and a .578 slugging percentage. To top it off, he took home a Gold Glove for his work at shortstop.

The MVP race was pretty much a wrap by the time the votes came in. Yount received 27 of 28 first-place votes from the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. He also became the first shortstop in either league to win the award since 1965.

His manager, Harvey Kuenn, had seen enough to know what made Yount special. After Yount hit two home runs in the final game of the regular season to help Milwaukee clinch the American League pennant, Kuenn praised him as the best all-around shortstop he had ever seen.

Yount, meanwhile, was quick to spread the credit around. Speaking to the Associated Press in 1982 about the MVP award, he said, “No one person can carry a team through a 162-game schedule.” That pretty much summed up how he saw the game.

His World Series Showing Gave Brewers Fans Even More to Cheer About

Yount did not take his foot off the gas in October. He hit .414 in the 1982 World Series against the St. Louis Cardinals and recorded four hits in a game twice. Milwaukee eventually fell in seven games, but the team had made its mark.

And Yount was far from a one-season wonder. He spent all 20 of his major league seasons with the Brewers, reached 3,000 hits in 1992, and won another AL MVP award in 1989. The Baseball Hall of Fame inducted him in 1999.

The Brewers came up short of a championship in 1982, but Yount gave Milwaukee a season it could hang its hat on. His MVP campaign and World Series run remain a huge part of the team's story.
