How Brett Favre Carved His Path to NFL’s Biggest Names?

Brett Favre was never the kind of QB who liked to play it safe. He threw deep, took risks and kept coming back for more. Sometimes, those risky throws won games. Other times, they came back to bite him. But fans loved watching him play. The pro-QB spent 16 seasons with the Green Bay Packers from 1992 to 2007. He won a Super Bowl, picked up three straight MVP awards, and became one of the biggest names in football. And he did it his own way.

Brett Favre Made the Packers Fun to Watch

The Packers got Favre from the Atlanta Falcons in 1992. He didn’t take long to make his mark. In Week 3, he came off the bench against the Cincinnati Bengals and threw a late touchdown pass to Kitrick Taylor to win the game.

That was just the start. Favre loved taking shots downfield, even when the throw looked risky. He could make a defense pay with one big play. But he also threw plenty of interceptions. He led the NFL in touchdown passes four times with Green Bay and led the league in interceptions twice.

Still, nobody could say he was boring. Favre won the AP NFL MVP award three years in a row, from 1995 to 1997. No other player has done that.

After that,  one of the most memorable moments came during Super Bowl XXXI on January 26, 1997. The champ threw a 54-yard TD pass to Andre Rison to get the Packers on the board. He celebrated with his helmet over his head, running down the field like a kid who had just made the biggest play of his life. Green Bay beat the Pats 35-21 to win the title.

Favre was more than a big arm. He was tough, too. He started 297 straight regular-season games, including 253 in a row with Green Bay. Even a broken thumb couldn’t keep him out for most of the 2003 season. He still threw 32 touchdown passes that year.

One of his best games came on Dec. 22, 2003, against the Oakland Raiders. His father, Irvin Favre, had died the night before. Brett still took the field and threw for 399 yards and four touchdowns in a 41-7 win.

At his Pro Football HOF induction in Canton, Ohio, on Aug. 6, 2016, Favre spoke about what he enjoyed most about his career.

“I had the most fun,” he said while discussing his time in football.

That sounds about right. Favre finished with 508 touchdown passes and 336 interceptions. He made mistakes, took chances and gave fans plenty to talk about. But he never looked like a guy who wanted to play scared. That’s a big part of what made him a legend.
