Packers fans debate every offseason if the Packers draft a wide receiver in the first round of the NFL Draft. It is a useless practice at this point. Green Bay has not taken a receiver in the first round since 2002. With their first-round pick in 2021, the Packers selected Eric Stokes, cornerback from the University of Georgia. The pick may not have been the one that fans wanted. However, it ended up being the one the Packers needed last regular season.
When the Packers selected Eric Stokes, he projected to be their third cornerback behind starters Jaire Alexander and Kevin King. Stokes played just eight defensive snaps in the Packers’ Week 1 loss to the Saints. However, both Alexander and King missed significant time with injuries in 2021. Eric Stokes became a starter from then on.
Of course, Rasul Douglas was signed to help provide some relief in the secondary. It was an excellent pickup as he had five interceptions in 12 games (two of which he returned for touchdowns). However, Stokes also established himself as a premier lockdown cornerback in the NFL.
In 16 games (12 starts) for the Packers, Eric Stokes had 14 passes defended, one interception, and 55 tackles. As a rookie cornerback, opposing quarterbacks often targeted Stokes, hoping to take advantage of his inexperience. The joke was on them, though. During training camp in 2021, Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams spent many practices picking on him. While it would have been easy to become frustrated, Eric Stokes realized that Rodgers and Adams are the best at their respective positions. By picking on him early and often, they prepared him for the role he would eventually take on.
As a result of practicing against the best quarterback and wide receiver in the NFL for weeks, Stokes put up numbers that most cornerbacks could only dream of. He allowed 48 receptions (49.5 completion percentage). This is despite being targeted 97 times. Eric Stokes gave up just 5.3 yards per target, a lower number than his equally surprising counterpart Rasul Douglas (5.5). He also gave up just three touchdown passes all season. This total was one fewer than Trevon Diggs and equal to Jalen Ramsey’s. AP named both Diggs and Ramsey to First-Team All-Pro in 2021. Equally as impressive, Eric Stokes held opposing quarterbacks to a passer rating of 71.3 when they targeted him. This rivals Ramsey, who gave up a passer rating of 71.1.
After the Packers' 2021 season ended, the media asked head coach Matt LaFleur about Stokes and his role. LaFleur had high praise for the rookie cornerback:
“He comes to work with the right attitude, with the right mentality, and I think he’ll continue to get better and better and better the more we progress through this thing. I just love what he’s all about as a person. I think he has a really great skill set to complement that, and we’re fortunate to have that guy on our football team.”
In 2022, Eric Stokes is now a veteran and considered part of the best cornerback trios in the NFL. Quay Walker and Devonte Wyatt, former college teammates and both first-round picks, now join him on the defense.

Of course, this event made national headlines due to AJ Dillon trucking over Elvis, the Kenosha Kingfish mascot. In a now viral video, Dillon and Elvis participated in a drill known as Oklahoma. The two participants start out lying flat on their backs. When the whistle blows, they get up and run towards each other. Dillon hit Elvis so hard that the mascot’s head flew off.

Chandon Sullivan has made a name for himself with the Green Bay Packers. During the 2021 season, Sullivan played all 17 games, a feat no other cornerback on the team was able to achieve. Between injuries and COVID, the Green Bay secondary faced challenge after challenge as various players missed time. Sullivan, however, was always there. He stayed healthy, he avoided injury, and he had the best season of his brief NFL career. It has been quite the journey to success for Chandon Sullivan. Always overlooked, always doubted, he has, time and again, proven the doubters wrong.
Chandon Sullivan was not heavily recruited out of high school. No major college program made him a scholarship offer. The only offers he had were from Georgia State, Georgia Southern, and Harvard. Sullivan had hoped to attend a university that garnered more attention from NFL scouts. Since he is from Winder, Georgia, Sullivan chose to attend Georgia State.
Even though Georgia State is not a heavily scouted school by the NFL, Sullivan would not let that stop him from being noticed. Sullivan used his academic talent to ensure that he was nationally recognized as one of the top scholar-athletes in the country. Coaches at Georgia State credited Sullivan for inspiring the other players in his position room when it came to academics, too. During his time at Georgia State, every defensive back had a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Chandon Sullivan graduated from Georgia State with a 3.84 GPA and a Bachelor’s Degree in journalism. He was one of 13 finalists for the William V. Campbell Trophy. This award is given to the top scholar-athlete in the country. At the same time, Sullivan became the first Georgia State football player invited to the Reese’s Senior Bowl, a game meant to showcase the talent of top senior players in the country.
Despite the success he saw in the classroom and on the gridiron in college, Chandon Sullivan was not drafted by any NFL team. He was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2018. Sullivan started that season on the Eagles’ practice squad, where he remained until October 26, 2018. As a young rookie, Sullivan appeared in five games for the defending champion Eagles, starting one of them. Unfortunately, he was placed back on the practice squad after Christmas of that year. The Eagles cut Sullivan on May 2, 2019.
Chandon Sullivan was not out of work for long. On May 6, four days later, the Green Bay Packers signed Sullivan. He made the active roster and appeared in all 16 games for the Packers, a year in which the team went 13-3. Sullivan had his first career interception that year, his only one of the season, while deflecting six passes. The second-year defensive back was targeted 31 times, but only allowed 11 receptions, good for a 35.5% completion rate. Opposing quarterbacks had a quarterback rating of 34.3 when targeting Sullivan that year.
The next season, 2020, saw Chandon Sullivan play in all 16 games again. This time, with injuries to the secondary, he also started 10 games. Sullivan had another interception in 2020 and continued to produce on the field. He saw his percentage of defensive snaps go up from 34% in 2019 to 71% in 2020. Sullivan also set a career-high with 41 tackles.
This past season, the first 17-game season in NFL history, Sullivan again played in every single game. Again, he made 10 starts as injuries in the secondary piled up all season. Sully, though, was up to the task and produced the best season of his brief NFL career. This year, Sullivan had three interceptions, his career high.
As the Green Bay Packers head into the playoffs, they do so as a team that is getting healthy. Several players, including Jaire Alexander, a partner of Mayfield Sports Marketing, will be coming back for the Packers’ playoff run. Even with the secondary at full strength, Sullivan has ensured that he will be a key member of this Packers’ defense. He has been there all season long. His hard work and determination helped him get to the NFL and led him to the Green Bay Packers. He will also be there when they (hopefully) hoist up the Lombardi Trophy in February.

The NFL has one of the most exclusive Hall of Fames in all of sports. It is so difficult to get in that, many times, players and coaches must wait for a senior committee to vote on their rightful place in the Hall of Fame. This is the case of former NFL head coach Dick Vermeil, who was named a senior finalist for the Hall of Fame.
Dick Vermeil began coaching almost immediately after graduating from San Jose State College in 1959. After serving as a high school football coach for a few high schools in the San Jose area, Vermeil received some coaching experience at the College of San Mateo and Napa Junior College. Additionally, Dick Vermeil coached the freshman football team at Stanford University in 1965.
In 1969, Dick Vermeil was hired as one of the first special teams coordinators in the NFL. George Allen, head coach of the Los Angeles Rams, made the hire. Coincidentally, the Philadelphia Eagles, a team that Vermeil would later serve as head coach, hired Jerry Williams as their special teams coordinator. That season, the Rams and Eagles were the first teams to have special teams coordinators. Jerry Williams is already in the NFL Hall of Fame. Dick Vermeil stayed with the Rams as special teams coordinator until 1974, except for 1970 when he was an assistant coach at UCLA.
Dick Vermeil became the head coach of UCLA in 1974. He held the position for two seasons before leaving for the NFL. While his stay at UCLA was brief, he left a lasting mark on the program. He had a 15-5-3 record in two seasons. In his final season at UCLA, 1975, he led the team to a 9-2-1 record and an upset of number one ranked Ohio State in the Rose Bowl. In 2014, Dick Vermeil was inducted into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame.
In 1976, Dick Vermeil took over as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. In the season prior to his arrival, the Eagles had gone 4-10. Due to a series of poor trades, Philadelphia was not able to give their new head coach a first round pick until 1979. The process of rebuilding the team was a long one, but Vermeil was the man for the job. After two seasons of sub-.500 football, the Philadelphia Eagles finished 9-7 in 1978. That season, the Eagles made the playoffs for the first time under Dick Vermeil’s leadership.
In 1979, Dick Vermeil led the Eagles to an 11-5 record and a berth in the NFC Championship Game. Though they lost a chance to go to the Super Bowl, the team won multiple playoff games for the first time in years. The Eagles and their fans, though, would not have to wait long for a Super Bowl appearance.
The very next season, in 1980, Dick Vermeil’s Eagles went 12-4 and appeared in Super Bowl XV. Unfortunately, the Eagles lost to the underdog Oakland Raiders. Philadelphia would not make another Super Bowl appearance until 2004, and would not win a Super Bowl until 2017. Dick Vermeil would not have to wait as long.
Vermeil coached the Philadelphia Eagles until 1982 when he was fired after a 3-6 start to the season. Following this, Dick Vermeil took a 15-year hiatus from coaching. During this time, he worked for CBS and ABC as an analyst. He nearly returned to the Eagles as coach in 1994, but could not come to an agreement with ownership.
In 1997, the St. Louis Rams hired Dick Vermeil to be their head coach. The first two years of his tenure with the Rams were forgettable, much like his first two seasons in Philadelphia. The Rams went 5-11 in his first season and 4-12 in the next. However, following a season-ending injury to Trent Green in the 1998 preseason, future Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner took the reins of the offense. In one of the greatest turnarounds in NFL history, the Rams finished 13-3 and won the Super Bowl.
After leading this “Greatest Show on Turf” to glory, Dick Vermeil once again stepped down from coaching. However, he could not be kept out of the game for long.
In 2001, the Kansas City Chiefs hired Dick Vermeil as their head coach. Though the Chiefs only had a winning record in two of his five seasons, Vermeil was instrumental in retooling the team into one of the most entertaining offenses in the NFL. His Chiefs finished 13-3 in 2003 before being upset in the playoffs. They also finished 10-6 in his final season (2005), but missed the playoffs that year.

Earlier this month, the United States lost one of its finest soldiers and statesmen: Colin Powell. While General Powell’s expertise was in politics, his wisdom can be applied to the fields and courts on which sports are played. Powell was once quoted as saying, “The best method of overcoming obstacles is the team method.” Indeed, the Green Bay Packers have seen their fair share of obstacles this season.
Thursday night’s matchup against the Arizona Cardinals was no different. In the days leading up to the game, Davante Adams and Allen Lazard were both put on the Reserve/COVID-19 List. Adams tested positive for the virus and Lazard was a close contact. Additionally, Marquez Valdes-Scantling was out with a leg injury. With their top three receivers out, as well as their top two cornerbacks, Pro Bowl left tackle, and Pro Bowl edge rusher, the team needed to come together in order to have a chance. And that they did! Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon, especially, had monstrous games for the Packers as they defeated Arizona 24-21.
After the Green Bay Packers dropped their first game of the season 38-3 against the New Orleans Saints, there were plenty of questions. Was this team good enough? Were there too many holes? Could they repeat as NFC North Division champs? Over the past seven games, all they have done is win and prove the doubters wrong.
Entering the Thursday Night matchup, the Arizona Cardinals were 7-0. Green Bay, at 6-1, were considered underdogs for a variety of reasons. They had, after all, just played on Sunday afternoon. Their top three receivers were all out. Their top two corners were out. Very few believed they could win.
However, as Wisconsin Sports Heroics pointed out, the Cardinals’ defense, which ranked fourth in the NFL entering the game, had one glaring weakness: run defense. Arizona’s run defense entered the game ranked 18th in the NFL in defending the run. If there was ever a game for the backfield of Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon to take over, it was this one.
Aaron Jones, who many believed would sign elsewhere during this past offseason, built upon his solid season with another fantastic night against the Arizona Cardinals. While multiple players stepped up in big ways, it was Aaron Jones who led all players not named Aaron Rodgers with all-purpose yards. Jones had 15 carries for 59 yards and a touchdown. Additionally, he had seven receptions for 51 yards, which led the team.
While neither stat is eye-popping in and of itself, the 110 total yards were achieved through hard work and athleticism. Viewers of the game were amazed with his play, including Seattle Seahawks quarterback, and former Wisconsin Badger, Russell Wilson.
One of the things that has flown under the radar this season has been how quickly Aaron Jones is climbing up the Green Bay Packers all-time rushing list. While his 59 yards on Thursday were by no means the most he had in a game, it was enough to move him into eighth place in franchise history. With 3,827 yards, Jones just squeaked by Packers’ legend Gerry Ellis, who had 3,826 rushing yards with the Packers. Next up on the list is Clarke Hinkle, who had 3,860 yards with Green Bay.
Within reach, also, is Dorsey Levens, who has partnered with Mayfield Sports Marketing in the past. Levens, who is currently sixth in Packers’ history in terms of rushing yards, finished his career in the Green and Gold with 3,937 yards. If Aaron Jones keeps up his current rushing pace this season, he could also pass Ryan Grant (4,193) and Tony Canadeo (4,197) before the season ends. This would place him fourth in franchise history with three years remaining on his contract. Ahman Green is the team’s all-time leading rusher with 8,322 yards. Aaron Jones surely had a fantastic night for the Green Bay Packers against the Arizona Cardinals. However, it was backup running back AJ Dillon who led the team in rushing. Dillon had 16 carries for 78 yards, his most in a game since his breakout game against the Tennessee Titans last season. Dillon, as always, complemented Aaron Jones perfectly. His bruising style of running made the Cardinals defense adjust away from defending the slashing, cutting style of Jones. Additionally, Dillon proved to be vital in pass protection, keeping blitzers away from Aaron Rodgers.
Perhaps, though, one of the ways in which AJ Dillon affected the game the most was on special teams. It is no secret that the Green Bay Packers struggle on kick and punt return coverage. With so many players injured, some important role players on offense and defense have had to step in on these coverages.
Arizona has one of the best return games in the NFL, and this was certainly a concern entering the game. Thanks to AJ Dillon, though, the Cardinals did not have any big returns. Dillon made a single solo tackle on a punt return that kept Arizona from achieving great field position to start their drive.
Football is a team game. When the Green Bay Packers last won the Super Bowl, they did so with over 20 players on injured reserve. This year’s squad certainly reminds many of that championship team, with many players stepping in and performing better than expected. In games such as this, against the NFC’s best, it is important for every guy to pick up his teammates. On this night, Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon did just that, making up for a depleted passing game with their own brand of heroics.

Jerry Kramer (born January 23, 1936, in Jordan, Montana) is a former professional football player, author and sports commentator, best remembered for his 11-year NFL career with the Green Bay Packers as an offensive lineman. As a 6'3", 250 pound right guard, Kramer was an integral part of the famous "Packer Sweep", Vince Lombardi’s signature play. Kramer was an All-Pro five times, and a member of the NFL's 50th anniversary team in 1969, but surprisingly, it took 50 years to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame!
Jerry Kramer’s life is not only about winning football championships with Vince Lombardi’s Green Bay Packers, it’s about helping people around him reach their full potential. Years ago, The Discovery Channel aired a television series entitled Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe. The series, which ran from 2005-2012, documented some of the dirtiest and unappreciated jobs in America. The idea of the show, beyond entertainment, was to make people more appreciative of the men and women who go unnoticed, yet fulfill such vital roles in society. On the Green Bay Packers football team, there is a man who does their “dirty work” on the field: Allen Lazard.
The Green Bay Packers’ offense has a plethora of stars. Aaron Rodgers is a three-time MVP and future Hall of Famer. Davante Adams is an All-Pro wide receiver who has also made four consecutive Pro Bowls. Aaron Jones, is a Pro Bowl running back. Both players have done past appearances and autograph sessions with Mayfield Sports Marketing. However the time is now and it is the “under-the-radar” work of Allen Lazard that makes much of their success possible.
One of the most unappreciated and overlooked jobs of wide receivers, especially in the Packers’ offense, is blocking. In this aspect, there are few better than Allen Lazard. Indeed, Lazard is one of the best blocking wide receivers in the entire NFL. On Sunday, teams recognized National Tight End Day. In his postgame press conference, Lazard joked that he felt that he deserved an honorable mention on that day based on the tight end-like work that he does.
In addition to this, Lazard opened up about how grateful he is to the Packers, especially head coach Matt LaFleur, who affectionately refers to Lazard as “Goon.”
Allen Lazard was not drafted by the Green Bay Packers. In fact, he was not drafted by any NFL team. Despite participating in the 2018 Senior Bowl, Lazard did not get any phone calls during the NFL Draft’s three day event. According to some scouts, teams were concerned about an apparent lack of speed from him.
The Green Bay Packers, though, signed him as an undrafted free agent. Lazard appeared in one game, for one snap, that season. He caught a pass for seven yards. The next year, 2019, Lazard proved to be a reliable player in the Packers’ offense. In addition to blocking in the run and short-pass games, Lazard caught 35 passes for 477 yards (still his career high) and three touchdowns. In addition, Lazard provided solid play on special teams, though he only played in 39% of snaps for that unit.
In 2020, with Davante Adams out, Lazard had the best game of his career against the New Orleans Saints. Lazard hauled in six receptions for 146 yards and a touchdown. Unfortunately, he suffered a core injury that required surgery and forced him to miss weeks of the season. He finished last season with 33 receptions, 451 yards, and three touchdowns in just 10 games.
This season, many fans have been focussed on the bigger names in the Packers’ offense. Additionally, Allen Lazard did not appear to be getting much attention in the passing game. However, he has been a mainstay on the field. As mentioned previously, Lazard has played a major role in blocking for his teammates, freeing them for big plays down the field.
So far this season, Lazard has 15 receptions for 184 yards and two touchdowns. He has caught a touchdown pass in each of the Packers’ last two games (versus the Bears and Washington).
Recently, it was reported that the Packers had to place Davante Adams on the Reserve/COVID-19 list. With Marquez Valdes-Scantling still questionable with an injury, it stands to reason that it will be Lazard who will be called upon to be the Packers “wide receiver one.”
As he showed in the New Orleans Saints game last season, Lazard is completely capable of putting the team on his back and carrying the load. However, as Lazard himself is quick to point out, football is a team game. The Packers will need the combined efforts of all their players to knock off the NFL’s best team (Arizona is 7-0). When the Green Bay Packers last won the Super Bowl in 2010, they had over 20 players on injured reserve. The “next man up” mentality became their mantra, and this year’s team has a similar attitude. The Wisconsin Badgers football team is known for producing solid NFL players. JJ Watt and TJ Watt have carved out careers that have made them known as some of the best defensive players in the NFL. However, the bread and butter of Wisconsin football has always been its offensive line and running backs. Over the past decade, there have been several running backs from Wisconsin who have had productive careers in the NFL. However, only two of them, thus far, have produced a Pro Bowl caliber season: Montee Ball and Melvin Gordon. The talent that the Wisconsin Badgers football team had at running back in the early 2010’s was absolutely incredible. When Melvin Gordon was a freshman in 2011, he was the third running back behind Montee Ball and James White. All three of these running backs ended up in the top ten career leaders in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns at Wisconsin.

Melvin Gordon, as might have been expected, did not play much in his first season at Wisconsin. In 2011, he appeared in just four games and received just 20 rushing attempts. He made the most of them, though, rushing for 98 yards and a touchdown.
In 2012, Gordon saw his role increase as he played in all 14 of Wisconsin’s games. He had an astounding 10.0 yards per rush, accumulating 621 yards on 62 rushing attempts. He scored three touchdowns on the ground and added another one as a receiver.
The next season, technically his sophomore season, Gordon became Wisconsin’s premier back. He rushed the ball 206 times for 1,609 yards and 12 touchdowns. However, for Gordon and Wisconsin, the best was yet to come.
In 2014, as a junior, Melvin Gordon had the best season for a running back in Wisconsin football history. In one game against Nebraska, Gordon rushed for 406 yards on the ground, breaking Ron Dayne’s school record of 331 rushing yards in one game. Additionally, Gordon rushed for 2,587 yards for the season. Only Barry Sanders, in 1988, rushed for more in a collegiate season (2,628 yards). Ron Dayne and Jonathan Taylor are the only other two running backs in Wisconsin history to eclipse 2,000 rushing yards in a season. Unsurprisingly, Melvin Gordon declared for the NFL Draft after the season ended.
The San Diego Chargers (now the Los Angeles Chargers) made Melvin Gordon the 15th overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. Gordon became an important part of the Chargers’ offense. As the starting running back in 12 games, Gordon rushed for 641 and a 3.5 yards per carry average. However, he did not score his first professional touchdown until the following season.
The touchdowns came in bunches that next season as Gordon’s play improved. Playing in 13 games (11 starts), Gordon rushed for 997 yards and 10 touchdowns while averaging 3.9 yards per carry. For his efforts, he was named to his first Pro Bowl despite the Chargers finishing just 5-11.
The next season, 2017, Gordon was even better. He played in and started all 16 games and had his first 1,000 yard season. Gordon carried the ball 284 times for 1,105 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground. He added 476 receiving yards giving him 1,581 all-purpose yards, the most in his career.
In 2018, Gordon was limited to 12 games (all starts), but still had an incredible season. In just 12 games, he rushed for 885 yards and 10 touchdowns. His play was good enough for him to be named to his second career Pro Bowl. His 490 receiving yards that year (a career-high) gave him 1,375 all-purpose yards, and his third consecutive 1,300+ all-purpose season.
After a down season in 2019, Gordon signed with the Denver Broncos. Again, he made an immediate impact, appearing in 15 games (10 starts). On a Broncos team that struggled for much of the season, Gordon provided the team with some bright moments, rushing for 986 yards and nine touchdowns.
Thus far in 2021, Gordon has 332 rushing yards and is on pace for yet another 900-yard season on the ground. As this is the final year of his deal with the Broncos, teams and fans will be monitoring his performance closely. There is no doubt that Gordon could be a valuable contributor to any team that he is on.
