Today’s featured Mayfield Sports athlete is Packer’s Hall of Famer and Super Bowl Champion, fullback William Henderson (@MWISWEETFROG on twitter). Henderson was born February 19th, 1971 in Richmond, Virginia. He attended Thomas Dale High School, which is in Chester, VA where he played on the varsity team his freshman through junior years. His senior year he did not play because of a knee injury. He then went on to spend his college days at the University of North Carolina. In the 1995 NFL draft Green Bay selected him early in the 3rd round.  Henderson spent his whole career with the Packers, which lasted through the 2006 season. Some career highlights include being selected to the Pro Bowl in 2004, helping the Packers win Super bowl XXXI, and blocking for some of the top individual rushing efforts in Packers history. In 2011 Henderson’s accomplishments were recognized as he was inducted into the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame.

Some interesting facts about William are that if he wasn’t a football player he would’ve liked to be a physical therapist or an orthopedic surgeon. Growing up other than fullback he played linebacker, offensive and defensive lines and even kicker! His favorite color is purple and if he were an animal he would be a tiger. If he had to describe himself in 3 words they would be thoughtful, strong, and patient. Lastly William is a franchise owner of a Sweet Frog Frozen Yogurt in Whitefish Bay, WI.

Today’s featured Mayfield Sports athlete is Packers offensive lineman Don Barclay (@Barclay_64 on twitter). Barclay was born on April 18th, 1989 in Newport News, Virginia. He lettered 3 years for Seneca Valley High School in Pennsylvania where he was named second team all-conference and first team all-conference twice. Barclay attended West Virginia where he was a 3 year starter for the Mountaineers and tied a school record by playing in 52 career games. In 2010 as a junior he was a 2nd Team All-Big East selection. As a senior in 2011 he earned 1st Team All-Big East and 4th Team All-American honors. He did not get drafted in the 2012 draft, but signed with the Packers as an undrafted free agent and was one of only 4 rookie free agents to make the opening day roster for the Packers. He was also the only offensive rookie to appear in every game in 2012. In his sophomore campaign he started 14 games for Green Bay.

Some interesting facts about Barclay are that growing up he played linebacker and tight end one year, but the rest he was a lineman. His favorite thing about Green Bay is that it’s a small town and everyone is close to one another unlike in bigger cities. If he wasn’t playing football he says he would be in a financial or sales field and would like to own his own company. His favorite color is blue and if he was an animal he says he’d be a dog because they are active and like to have fun!

Today’s featured Mayfield Sports athlete is Packers All-Pro Eddie Lacy.  Eddie was born in Gretna, Louisiana on June 2nd, 1990.  Lacy attended Dutchtown high school where his junior and senior years he was named to the class 5A all state team. Lacy then went on to play at the University of Alabama. His first season there he redshirted for the eventual national championship winning team. His second season in 2010 as a redshirt freshman he was Alabama’s 3rd string running back behind two current NFL players Mark Ingram and Trent Richardson. The 2011 season Lacy moved up to the #2 running back where he helped Alabama win the 2012 national championship. In Lacy’s final season at Alabama, he was their feature running back and he handled it well. He was named to the first team all SEC team, was named the SEC Championship Game MVP and was the Offensive MVP for the BCS National Championship Game as Alabama repeated as national champions.  After being selected in the second round of the draft by the Packers, Lacy was determined to continue being successful on the football field. With his hard-nosed and physical running style, he ran for over 1,100 yards and 11 touchdowns, which have earned him Rookie of the Year awards from a number of publications as well as AP second team All-Pro honors and a trip to the Pro Bowl!

Levi's Challenge Event a Huge Success with help from Packers Don Barclay and Jerron McMillian:

Levi Biestle is a 3 1/2 yr old young boy who was involved in a tragic lawn tractor accident. He has had 11 surgeries and three toes and part of a foot amputated. More surgeries will be needed, as will be money to help pay for these medical expenses.  (To read about this in more detail, visit levischallenge.com

This past Saturday, Packers players Don Barclay, Jerron McMillian and a host of volunteers and local businesses got together to donate their time, money, services and raffle items in a concerted effort to raise money for this young Wisconsinite.

The Newburgh Fire department hosted the event, spearheaded by Wayne Sargent and Steve Tate of the "Ultimate Packer Fan Connection." There were raffles, auctions, food and beverage sales with all proceeds going to the cause.

LS Limo of Appleton provided free transportation for the players. Mayfield Sports Marketing donated items for the raffles and auctions. Too many others to mention were volunteers that helped run the day-long event.

News of the event was spread via social media by the players, fans and members of the Packers Talk Radio Network and Mayfield Sports Marketing.

But of course, the biggest draw were the appearances by Packers' players Don Barclay and Jerron McMillian, who both cleared time in their schedules to be there to support the fund raising event.

The players signed items that were then auctioned or raffled off. All event attendees received free autographs from the players, but were encouraged to make a donation if they were able to.

In all, it was a huge success; the day's events raised close to $30,000 to help Levi and his family with the medical expenses they face.

Many thanks go to all involved, but it was the appearance of the Packers' players that brought in the masses.  If you want to make your next event a major success, please fill out our contact form and we'll be happy to discuss with you how we can help.

Everyone joys seeing their name in the newspaper. We are excited and humbled to be featured recently in the Waukesha Freeman and Oconomowoc Enterprise. http://www.gmtoday.com/news/business/front/topstory87.asp

Sports marketing business moving into high gear Oconomowoc owner works to bring Packers, others to the area

OCONOMOWOC - It’s been a year since Mark Mayfield left the security of a full-time job to work at getting his own sports marketing business off the ground. And in those 12 months, his expectations have been exceeded only by the level of interest from the groups he’s helped and the players he’s booked.

Nonprofit organizations are usually assured of raising more money at fundraisers if they have a celebrity in attendance. And large associations usually have higher attendance at conferences if the keynote speaker is a professional athlete.

“I am essentially a booking agency for professional athletes,” said Oconomowoc’s Mark Mayfield, owner of Mayfield Sports Marketing. “I need to make sure it’s a good fit for them (the group and the athlete). Mayfield Sports represents the best interests of the player.”

Rates for appearances by current and former Brewers or Packers range from $1,000 to $30,000 for a 90-minute appearance. Signing of autographs and a photo session can either be with an extra fee or built into the base price.

Strong, personal relationships

Mayfield has a direct relationship with the players or their agents, so when booking them, the response time is much faster than if a business or organization tries to book them alone.

Mark Mayfield, left, and former Green Bay Packer William Henderson, right, are joined by Bucky Badger. Submitted photo

Recent bookings have included current Green Bay Packers Dujuan Harris, Nick Perry, Jerron McMillian, Eddie Lacy, Johnathan Franklin, Datone Jones, Micah Hyde, Don Barclay, Josh Sitton, Bryan Bulaga, Chris Banjo, Jerel Worthy, Mike Daniels, John Kuhn, Sam Shields and Morgan Burnett; former Packers Gilbert Brown, William Henderson, Dorsey Levens, Santana Dotson, Mark Tauscher, Dave Robinson and Ahman Green; Packers President Mark Murphy; billiards world champion Allison Fisher; Olympic and World Champion gymnast Chellsie Memmel; and former Wisconsin Badger and New York Giants player Ron Dayne.

“Usually an association will call and either be very specific about a particular player they want or be very vague and say they just want a current member of the Packers,” Mayfield said. “I ask a bunch of questions to better figure out what they want - a celebrity appearance, autographs, a motivational speaker or whatever. I’m always very honest with the client. You get what you want, but we can guide you in the selection. I generally give the client a menu of options.”

Mayfield makes a point of being at nearly every one of the events for which he books a player or former player. Part of the reason for this is to oversee that everything goes as planned, but it’s also good business. The player becomes more familiar with him, which can lead to more bookings, and the organization meets him, which also can lead to bookings for future events.

About half of the bookings Mayfield sets up are in the Green Bay and Appleton areas, simply by default of being closer to the Packers. But, there are others in the Madison and Milwaukee areas. Waukesha Sports uses him quite often to help bring in players.

Anderson, former Olympic gymnast Chelsie Memmel, former Green Bay Packer Gilbert Brown and Wisconsin American Legion Adjutant David Kurtz. Submitted photo

“We have at least two signings every month,” said Robb Dobbratz, owner of Waukesha Sports. “He’s got a good relationship with a lot of players. He’s an up and coming guy, and he’s going to grow.”

Dobbratz also uses Mayfield to book players at autograph sessions in Green Bay.

The next big signing at Waukesha Sports will be from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 1, when current Packers Lacy, Perry and McMillian will be on hand. The latter two were booked by Mayfield.

A chance encounter

Mayfield’s business started a few years ago when he was an employee at Olympia Resort in Oconomowoc, and Gilbert Brown was there for a few days for a promotional event. After talking a few times over the next five days, Brown paid Mayfield to design a website for him.

“That’s where it started,” Mayfield said. “Now I talk to Gilbert three or four times every week.”

A lot of Mayfield’s business among current players is through word of mouth. When he has an inquiry about a player he’s not worked with before, Mayfield first calls one of his current clients for an introduction. It doesn’t take long after that to sign a deal.

“For me, it’s all about people, communicating with people,” he said. “I’m always very clear with them. I don’t leave any gray areas. I don’t want to let the client down.

“Gilbert Brown trained me on that. If he shakes your hand and says he’ll do something, he’ll do it. I want to be that same way.”

He said he’s glad he had the presence and the confidence to talk to Brown at the beginning. That chance meeting sparked his new career.

“It’s very rewarding, because I earned it,” he said. “It’s very humbling. I had some help along the way, but I’ve worked very hard to be where I am today.”
