Aaron Rodgers never actually defined what "run the table" meant. The last six games of the regular season to ensure another playoff berth? Or all the way to Houston for Super Bowl LI?

Whatever his intent, the Green Bay Packers and their quarterback own the longest active winning streak among the NFC playoff teams, and whether momentum is anything other than some undefined intangible, perhaps the most important thing for coach Mike McCarthy's team was the confidence that permeated through the visitors locker room after Sunday night's 31-24 victory over the Detroit Lions.

"I believe in myself and my abilities, but I also believe in this team," Rodgers said. "This wasn't just a shot in the dark. It was an optimistic belief in my teammates that we were going to start handling adversity better."

Rodgers somehow infused that into just about everyone around him with great performances from Ty Montgomery, Davante Adams, Jared Cook, Mike Daniels and more.

As much as anything, and that includes Rodgers' own stellar play during the six-game winning streak, that feeling could be the best thing the Packers have in their favor as they head into Sunday's playoff opener against the New York Giants at Lambeau Field.

The Packers have momentum, and Rodgers called that "contagious."

"You have that feeling now when you enter a game that you don't have during a losing streak, where you expect to win," he said. "You expect to win when you take the field, and that's an exciting energy that you can feel in the locker room and on the field pregame, and guys are sticking together."

Several times during the streak, Rodgers has praised his teammates for not "making comments [or] being an unnamed source or saying derogatory things about teammates," and coach Mike McCarthy last week described the team had "a little bit of an edge to them" that he noticed even before the streak began.

It was at the very least noteworthy -- if not telling -- that McCarthy described the reaction in the postgame locker room after winning the NFC North this way: "It wasn't the best celebration we've ever had."

"But this team has an energy, has an edge, has a confidence that was evident very early in our preseason," McCarthy added. "And I've always believed in that and they believe in that. So maybe that's why we're not doing cartwheels right now because we have, like I said, our plan's to try to win it all. We're one of six that gets to go battle it out in the NFC and we'll tighten our focus to the Giants. But we never lost sight of where we wanted to go."

The number of players still around from the Super Bowl XLV team dwindles each year, but there are some key components of that team still around, Rodgers and Clay Matthews among them. And this team, the No. 4 seed in the NFC, might be similar to the 2010 wild-card club in at least one way.

"I don't know if in 2010 we had all the pieces," Matthews said. "I just think we got hot and no one wanted to play us then. Hopefully that's the case this year.

"You need to be playing well toward the latter part of the season, and that's exactly what we're doing. I feel like we're capable of getting back to where we want to go, and that's the Super Bowl. So hopefully that's the case."

It would take a 10-game winning streak to do so. The six already off the table might have been the easy part.

"We have bigger aspirations," McCarthy said, wearing an NFC North Champions hat. "So this is the first step."

Mike Pennel and Packers' Run-Stopping Party

GREEN BAY - In any other year, the Green Bay Packers might be celebrating the return of defensive lineman Mike Pennel from a four-game suspension with balloons, noisemakers, banners and cake.

Pennel is returning just in the nick of time to face the impressive Dallas Cowboys running game and what defense wouldn’t be high-fiving the return of a 6-4, 330-pound man-mountain coming off the best training camp of his life?

The reality is that Pennel isn’t a savior.

He returns having to earn a place on the NFL’s top run defense, not have it handed to him. The Packers have a pretty good thing going on defense and Pennel’s job will be to play to the standard they have set through four games this season.

“They’ve been playing really well, man,” Pennel said Monday, the first time he has been able talk to the media since his suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy started Sept. 4. “Seeing them guys out there week to week, the hardest thing was just not being a part of that. Seeing them, I just want to get ready to get back and see where I can contribute.”

To show how well the Packers’ run defense has been playing, their stats actually got worse after they held the New York Giants to 43 yards on 15 carries. They had been holding opponents to 1.8 yards per carry, but after their 23-16 victory at Lambeau Field on Sunday night, it’s up to 2.0.

The Packers' run defense ranks first in yards allowed per game (42.8), yards per carry allowed, runs of 20 or more yards allowed (zero), first downs allowed (12) and first-down percentage allowed (14 percent) and tied for second in fewest touchdowns allowed (one).

It certainly can be argued that they’ve caught every break in the book and have only faced one top running back in four games, Minnesota’s Adrian Peterson. Jacksonville was without Chris Ivory in Week 1, Detroit had just lost Ameer Abdullah to a season-ending injury in Week 3 and the Giants were without Rashad Jennings on Sunday night.

So, it could be that Pennel’s return is more important than it might seem because the Cowboys, with their elite offensive line and rookie sensation Ezekiel Elliott, lead the NFL in rushing with 155.2 yards per game. Pennel did not overlook whom the Packers were playing his first week back.

“Every week, every week,” Pennel said when asked if he had spent extra time watching the Cowboys.

The biggest concern Pennel and defensive line coach Mike Trgovac had with Pennel being away from the practice field was him losing his conditioning and gaining weight. Pennel had worked hard in the offseason to keep his weight in the 330 range and at the time he began serving his suspension he was at 333.

During the five weeks he was gone — it was a four-game suspension and so the bye week didn’t count as time served — Pennel was allowed to go to position meetings and work out at the facility, but he couldn’t watch practice or go to games. He said he did not waste his time during the off-facility hours.

“It actually went better than expected,” Pennel said. “I’m actually below 330 probably for the first time since coming in in the regular season. Just feeling real good, real fresh and that’s an advantage to have on guys you’re playing against that have been banging for four weeks.”

Pennel would have started in the 3-4 defense along with nose tackle Letroy Guion and end Mike Daniels had he not been suspended. The Packers haven’t played a lot of 3-4, but when they did they used outside linebacker Datone Jones and rookie Dean Lowry as the end opposite Daniels.

Defensive coordinator Dom Capers has the option of playing more 3-4 with Pennel or using him on early downs with either Guion or Daniels in the nickel. Because Pennel is quicker than Guion and showed much-improved pass rush during training camp, he could take snaps from rookie Kenny Clark on passing downs.

But he’ll have to earn his snaps.

“I think our young guys have stepped up and certainly our veteran guys have done a nice job,” Capers said. “We just have to keep moving forward in that area because it has an impact on what you do defensively. We’ll have our biggest challenge to date this weekend.”

To activate Pennel, the Packers will have to clear a spot on the 53-man roster and the most logical move would be to waive rookie Brian Price and see if he can be returned to the practice squad where he started the season. He would have to clear waivers in order to rejoin the team.

THE BIG 920 UNVEILS “GREEN & GOLD WEDNESDAY” FEATURING GILBERT BROWN

MILWAUKEE –With a full slate of practice and press conferences, Wednesday is traditionally a big news day for the Green Bay Packers and their passionate fans.

It’s about to get even bigger.

The Big 920, Milwaukee’s sports station, is proud to announce that Packers Legend defensive lineman Green Bay legend Gilbert “The Gravedigger” Brown will join the broadcast lineup on “Green & Gold Wednesday” during the football season.

Brown, a fan favorite during two stints Green Bay (1993-’99; 2001-’03), will host “GRAVEDIGGER RADIO” on Wednesday and will make monthly appearances during a live broadcast on Wednesday nights at The Crest, 257 W. Broadway in historic downtown Waukesha.

“Our weekly ‘Wednesday Night Live’ show at The Crest in downtown Waukesha is quickly becoming a tradition for all football fans in the area,” Nelles said. “And with Gilbert joining the show – on location – once per month, it’s a must-listen and must-visit event!”

A member of the Packers’ Super Bowl XXXI championship team that will mark its 20th anniversary next year, Brown was known for gobbling opposing ballcarriers and burgers during his time in Green Bay.

Brown played in 125 games with the Packers and was credited with 292 tackles and seven sacks. He played in 15 playoff games, which ranks second behind Hall of Famer Brett Favre (22) on the storied franchise’s all-time list. Since retiring after the 2003 season, Brown has remained active in Wisconsin in a variety of business and charitable endeavors, including youth football camps and The Gilbert Brown Foundation.

“Gilbert is as well-known and as active in the Milwaukee community as any member of the Packers’ Super Bowl XXXVI team,” Nelles said. “And I can’t wait for him to share his unfiltered – and often hilarious – opinions on the current Packers with me every Wednesday.”
