The Green Bay Packers family lost one of its most respectable people this week. Former team president and CEO Bob Harlan died on March 5 at the age of 89. His impact helped steer Green Bay back to NFL glory in the 1990s.
Soon after the update came, NFL legend LeRoy Butler shared a personal story that showed why players loved Harlan so much. Butler spoke about their bond during an appearance with TMJ4 reporter Charles Benson. His memories painted a picture of a leader who stayed close to his players.
LeRoy Butler Revisits How Bob Harlan Impacted Packers Players In His Era

Butler came into Green Bay in 1990, the same year Harlan had already settled into his role as team president. Their first meeting left a lasting mark on the future HOF.
In that interview, Butler recalled the moment clearly. “Bob Harlan shook my hand and said, my door will always be open for you. And I said to myself, is that really true?”
Butler did not forget that promise. A few days later, he decided to test it. He walked straight to Harlan’s office at Lambeau Field. The CEO sat in the middle of a meeting. Still, Harlan welcomed him inside.
“I think a couple of days later, I went up to his office. And his door was wide open. He had a meeting going on. And he saw me come in. No, Leroy, come in,” Butler said during the TMJ4 interview with Charles Benson on March 7.
That simple gesture shaped Butler’s view of Harlan. Most players rarely spoke with team presidents or owners. Yet Harlan built a different culture in Green Bay. He listened. Butler even remembered a meeting where he arrived with stars like Brett Favre and Reggie White. The players carried a list of requests. They wanted better facilities and a few comforts around the locker room.
Butler explained the moment during the same interview.“Me, Brett, Reggie, we go to his office. He said, oh boy, what do y’all need? I said, I want our showers to be bigger; I want a basketball gym. How about a chef?”
Harlan agreed to most of it. However, he added one condition that Butler never forgot.
“One answer, yes. Then he hesitated. I said, oh boy… but you got to win,” Butler said on TMJ4 on March 7. The message stuck. Under Harlan’s leadership, the Packers returned to the top of the NFL. The team reached two Super Bowls and won the title during the 1996 season.
For Butler, that success was linked directly to Harlan’s leadership style. The CEO treated players like family, but he also set clear expectations. Decades later, Butler still remembers the promise behind that open door and the challenge that came with it.
