Before the 1990s, most safeties stayed deep and waited for mistakes. Their value came from big tackles and broken passes. Butler changed that by playing everywhere on the field.
Drafted by Green Bay in 1990, he became the first safety in league history to record at least 30 interceptions and 20 sacks. He finished his career with 38 interceptions and 20.5 sacks. Those stats forced the league to rethink how it used the position. Butler did not sit back. He blitzed off the edge. He dropped into coverage. He tracked tight ends down the middle. He filled running lanes and closed space quickly. Because he could do all of it, offences never knew where he would appear.
From 1993 to 1998, Butler recorded 27 interceptions and 16.5 sacks. No safety in that era matched that level of balance. Ex-Packers teammate Reggie White said during a Green Bay alumni event on July 22, 2001, that Butler sees the field before the ball is snapped. That awareness allowed Butler to disguise coverage, bait quarterbacks, and arrive at the point of attack before plays developed.
Because of his multifaceted talent, Green Bay could channel flexible defensive strategies. Coordinators could blitz him without leaving holes behind. They could drop him deep without losing support near the line. His presence changed how the defence functioned as a unit.
Today, hybrid stars like Derwin James and Minkah Fitzpatrick play roles that mirror Butler’s influence. However, Butler introduced the concept long before it became common. He did not follow the old safety model. Instead, he created the modern one.
