Desmond Howard, born on May 15, 1970, in Cleveland, Ohio. Howard attended St. Joseph High School where he was a three-sport athlete. He excelled in football as well as track and field and basketball.
Howard earned All-American and All-Ohio honors as a tailback during his senior season. He had 18 touchdowns while also recording 10 interceptions. He chose to attend the University of Michigan as a running back, but quickly converted to wide receiver.
Howard’s career at Michigan will always be remembered. His freshman year he only recorded nine receptions. However, he broke out as a sophomore with 63 catches for 1,025 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also showed his versatility, running for 58 yards and averaging 29.6 yards on kickoffs, with a touchdown return.
His junior season was the one that would cement his name in history. He helped Michigan to a 10-1 regular season record, a Big Ten title and a No. 4 ranking. He became the first receiver in Big Ten history to lead the conference in scoring as he set or tied five NCAA records and 12 single-season Michigan records. He caught 61 passes for 960 yards and 19 scores. He also ran for 165 yards and two touchdowns.
He also made an impact on special teams with two return touchdowns. The All-American won the Heisman by the second largest margin of victory in the trophy’s history. Howard was just the second wide receiver to ever win the Heisman.
On December 12, 2014, the Big Ten Network included Howard on "The Mount Rushmore of Michigan Football.” Howard was joined in the honor by Charles Woodson, Tom Harmon, and Anthony Carter.

His most impactful play came on the biggest stage. He returned a a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown in Super Bowl XXXI against the New England Patriots. Howards return was the longest in Super Bowl history until Jacoby Jones broke the record in 2013.
Howard was named Super Bowl MVP as a result. After retiring from professional football in 2002, Howard transitioned to a successful career in sports broadcasting.
