For his achievements, he was named USA Today's All-American, Des Moines Register Offensive Player of the Year in 2013, Defensive Player of the Year in 2012, and a three-time All-State Selection. A four-star recruit out of Urbandale. Lazard continued his football career at Iowa State.

With his talent, Lazard helped reshape the Iowa State program. Now that he's enjoyed a successful NFL career, is he the best current player from the Iowa State Cyclones?

Where Allen Lazard Ranks Among Active Iowa State NFL Players

8) AJ Klein (LB)

A Wisconsin native, AJ Klein played for the Cyclones from 2009-2012, and he was one of the best defensive players in Iowa State history. In 2011, he won Big 12 Co-Defensive Player of the Year and First-Team All-Big 12 after he led Iowa State with 116 tackles and 7.5 tackles for loss.

During his senior season, Klein again won First-Team All-Big 12 after he finished the year with 117 tackles. In total, Klein tallied 361 tackles for Iowa State and still holds the Iowa State record with four defensive touchdowns.

The Carolina Panthers drafted Klein in the fifth round of the 2013 NFL Draft, where he spent four seasons before spending time with the Panthers, Saints, Bills, Ravens, Bears, and Bills, where he is currently.

7) Will McDonald IV (LB)

Another Wisconsin native, Will McDonald IV, the conference named him First-Team All-Big 12 three times (2020-2022). They also awarded him Big-12 Co-Defensive Lineman of the Year in 2021, in which he tied for the Big 12 lead in sacks with 11.5 that season.

Nobody of recent memory on the defensive side had a better career than McDonald IV. He finished his college career with 125 tackles, 40.5 tackles for loss, and a school-record 34.0 sacks.

Following his stellar college career, the New York Jets selected McDonald IV in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft.

6) Xavier Hutchinson (WR)

Xavier Hutchinson began his career at Blinn College, where in two years, he had 58 receptions for 961 yards and seven touchdowns before transferring to Iowa State.

Hutchinson burst onto the scene by winning Big-12 Newcomer of the Year in 2020, and his career at Iowa took off from there as Hutchinson was awarded First-Team All-Big 12 three times (2020-22).

In 2021, Iowa State's single-season reception record with 83. For his final season at Iowa State, Hutchinson had 107 receptions, 1,171 yards, and six touchdowns in 12 games for the Cyclones. In 37 career games for the Cyclones, Hutchinson had 254 receptions, 2,929 yards and 15 touchdowns.

The Houston Texans selected in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft.

5) Charlie Kolar (TE)

Charlie Kolar was one of the most decorated tight ends in Iowa State history. He was named All-Big 12 First-Team three times (2019-2021).

In 2021, Kolar won the William V. Campbell Award. The award signifies a combination of academics, community service, and on-field performance. Kolar had 168 receptions, 2,181 yards, and 23 touchdowns in 43 career games for the Cyclones.

The Baltimore Ravens selected Kolar in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft.

4) Breece Hall (RB)

At Iowa State, Breece Hall helped reshape the Iowa State program by becoming one of the most productive running backs in ISU history. He won Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year in 2020 and 2021 after back-to-back seasons of over 1,000 yards and 23 total touchdowns and was awarded 2x First-Team All-Big 12 in 2020 and 2021.

Hall had 3,933 yards, 50 touchdowns, and 82 receptions for 734 yards and six touchdowns for his career at Iowa State.

Drafted by the New York Jets in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft, he played in seven games for the Jets before a knee injury prematurely ended his season.

3) David Montgomery (RB)

David Montgomery played for Cyclones from 2016-2018. He broke out in 2017. He was named First- Team All American by PFF and First-Team All-Big 12 with a season of 1,146 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 36 receptions for 296 yards. In 2018, Montgomery had four straight games rushing for over 100 yards and finished the season with 1,216 yards and 13 rushing touchdowns.

The Chicago Bears selected Montgomery in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft. He spent four years in Chicago before signing a three-year $18 million contract with the Detroit Lions on March 16.

2) Allen Lazard (WR)

Allen Lazard is the greatest receiver to come out of Iowa State. He lived up to the billing of being a highly-touted recruit coming to a sleeping giant program under head coach Matt Campbell. Lazard continued his dominance at Iowa State, where he tallied 240 catches, 3,360 yards, and 26 touchdowns in 48 career games for the Cyclones. Lazard was named Second-Team All-Big 12 in 2015 and First-Team All-Big 12 in 2016 and 2017.

After his career at Iowa State, Lazard went undrafted in the 2018 NFL Draft. He was immediately signed to the Jacksonville Jaguars practice squad. He remained there until Green Bay signed him to their practice squad in 2018.

Lazard spent five seasons in Green Bay, becoming a favorite target of future Hall-of-Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Lazard contributed to a top-five offense in Rodgers' two MVP seasons. In Green Bay, Lazard totaled 169 catches, 2,236 yards, and 20 touchdowns in 57 games played.

Before the start of the 2023 season, Lazard joined the New York Jets on a four-year $44 million contract.

1) Brock Purdy (QB)

Nobody has had a bigger impact on the Iowa State program than a four-year starter, Brock Purdy. He was a three-time All-Big 12 quarterback with 32 school records, including passing (81) and total touchdowns (100). He completely revitalized the Iowa State program.

The San Francisco 49ers then drafted Purdy with the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. He started the season as a third-string quarterback before injuries thrust him into the starting role. Purdy started the final five games of the season. He went a perfect 5-0 and led the 49ers to an NFC Championship Game appearance.

Brock Purdy had a stellar football career at Iowa State, and he's continuing that excellence in the NFL.

An Iowa State Reunion in New York

With the signing of Allen Lazard and the drafting of Breece Hall in 2022 and Will McDonald IV, a reunion of sorts has taken place for the New York Jets. McDonald IV and Hall never played with Lazard at Iowa State, but they were all accomplished players heading into the NFL. Playing with Aaron Rodgers has to be a special moment for all of them.

Allen Lazard & Xavier Hutchinson: The Wide Receiver connection

Xavier Hutchinson and Allen Lazard have one similarity: both were decorated receivers at Iowa State. Both are expected to be key targets for their quarterbacks this season, too. Hutchinson for rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud and Lazard for Aaron Rodgers. But one thing is certain. They both helped change the football landscape at Iowa State.

Josiah Deguara was born on Feb. 14, 1997, in Santa Rosa, Calif. Deguara attended Folsom High School in Folsom, Calif., where he was a standout football player. He earned MaxPreps California Division I honors at TE and grabbed Sacramento Bee First-Team All-Metro Honors as a hybrid in 2014.

Deguara tallied 240 receptions for 3,274 yards and 42 touchdowns in high school. A two-star recruit, Deguara committed to play at Cincinnati.

2023 Expectations For Green Bay Packers Tight End Josiah Deguara

Josiah Deguara Bears Down With the Cats

Deguara had a productive career at Cincinnati. His 92 catches are the most in school history for a tight end, and he was the second tight end in school history to have 500 or more yards receiving. Travis Kelce was the other, as he had 722 yards in 2012.

He averaged almost 13 yards per catch (12.9) and became only the second tight end in school history to exceed 1,000 yards for his career (1,117), along with Brent Celek (1,135).

In 2018, Deguara earned second-team All-AAC honors with 38 receptions, 468 yards, and five touchdowns in 13 games. A year later, Deguara earned first-team All-AAC honors, as he had 39 catches for 504 yards and seven touchdowns in 13 games.

Professional Career

The Green Bay Packers drafted Deguara in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Deguara was drafted as an H-back player in the offense, where he's lined up as tight end and fullback.

Deguara has 39 catches for 371 yards and two touchdowns in 35 games in his career so far.

Expectations for Josiah Deguara in 2023

Deguara is the most experienced tight end on the roster. He adds not only a blocking element but an option for Quarterback Jordan Love to throw to over the middle. Deguara has a lot of experience in the Packers' system that will benefit Jordan Love and rookie tight ends Luke Musgrave and Tucker Kraft.

Head Coach Matt LaFleur thinks Deguara can take on a bigger role in the 2023 season, according to Bill Huber of Sports Illustrated:

"He's a guy that has a lot of versatility in terms of whether he's in the backfield, whether he's in a wing position, we can split him out, so it's just him getting those opportunities and then taking advantage of them."

Deguara said he's excited to step into a leadership role this season when speaking with Huber:

"The No. 1 thing is just gratitude," Deguara said. "Try to relay that to them and just be grateful for being here each and every day. When you're a young guy, you don't really get it. Even me, being in one spot for all four years is a blessing. I'm just grateful to show up here every day... It's definitely a change, there's no doubt about it. I'm trying to step up as a leader because I had Big Dog (Marcedes Lewis) and Bobby (Robert Tonyan) the first three years of my career and now I'm the oldest guy in the room. I'm the leader and I'm trying to step into that position with Tyler (Davis) and trying to lead these young guys and do as many good things as we've done the last few years, continue that tradition, and continue the standard in the room." Jaire Alexander came into the NFL in 2018 and has talked the talk since day one. However, in the NFL, talking the talk isn't enough. Jaire Alexander has backed it up every step of the way. He has been named to two All-Pro teams and has also been selected to two Pro Bowls.

The Packers have hit on their first-round pick, and Jaire Alexander is undoubtedly one of the best corners in the entire league. But where exactly does he stack up amongst the NFL's best?

Where does Jaire Alexander Rank Among NFL CBs?

Other Top Corners

It has been a long time since the Packers have had a corner that is in the conversation to be the best in the entire league. Other candidates for the top spot are Jalen Ramsey of the Miami Dolphins, Sauce Gardner of the New York Jets, Darius Slay of the Philadelphia Eagles and Patrick Surtain II of the Broncos.

All of the top defensive backs have the accolades and stats to hold the title of best corner in the NFL. In 2022, the First Team All-Pro corners were Sauce Gardner and Patrick Surtain II. Jaire Alexander was named to the Second All-Pro team. Alexander, however, set a career-high with five interceptions in 2022.

Why Jaire Deserves the Top Spot

Jaire Alexander is one of the few players on this list who doesn't get to play as much man coverage as others. This is not because Jaire isn't capable but rather because Green Bay's scheme doesn't call for it. The Packers play a lot of zone coverage and rarely let corners travel or follow. However, toward the end of the season, the Packers' defense started playing more man-to-man coverage and Alexander continued to shine.

Perhaps his most memorable moment of the 2022 season was when he went toe to toe with Justin Jefferson in a must-win game for the Packers. Jaire Alexander talked a lot of trash heading into the week 17 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings. He backed it up by holding Jefferson without a catch when they were matched up against each other.

Jefferson set the league on fire this year with a phenomenal season. Jaire Alexander put that fire out in week 17, but Jefferson wasn't the only wideout who couldn't crack the code against Alexander.

Jaire Alexander Against Top Wide Receivers

(Courtesy of PFF)

Jaire Alexander can perform against the best wide receivers on a weekly basis. He does not get as many opportunities in man coverage as other top DBs. If he were to play in a defense where he gets to shadow the opposing team's No. 1 weekly, maybe he would get more attention from All-Pro voters.

The Green Bay Packers season is quickly approaching, and summer work has already started. Obviously, all eyes are on Jordan Love as he steps into the starting role after Aaron Rodgers was traded to the New York Jets. There is no way to know how the Packers will perform until the team steps foot on the field in week one, but reports stemming from OTAs and minicamps are giving fans plenty of reasons to be excited as Packers Training Camp is approaching.

Storylines From OTAs Carrying Into Packers Training Camp (2023)

Jordan Love Receiving Praise Ahead of Packers Training Camp

The Packers OTA's ended in June, but Jordan Love received plenty of high praise before the team starts training camp this week. Fans should not judge Love's performance at OTAs harshly. The season cannot be decided based on some drills and plays in the summer. However, for fans looking for any sort of update, OTAs provided plenty of clips and quotes that can showcase a little about Jordan Love's play.

Rookies Turning Heads

How Jordan Love plays will play a huge role in the team's success, but the impact rookies and the defense can make could make his job significantly easier. The Packers did not do much to add talent in free agency and opted to build through the draft. The team added some names who could make an impact immediately. Lukas Van Ness is one of those names.

The Packers are looking to get Rashan Gary back in 2023, but he may need some time to get back to %100 after tearing his ACL. The team added athletic pass rusher Lukas Van Ness and he is looking as advertised.

While Van Ness will make an impact on the defensive side of the ball, the Packers added Luke Musgrave and Tucker Kraft on the other side of the ball. Both tight ends will have a chance to play early, as the Packers' tight end room is not very deep. Tyler Davis and Josiah Deguara have the inside track to playing time, but both rookie tight ends also have the ability to make an impact. They both bring a combination of speed and side to the table.

Packers quarterback Jordan Love also seemed to like what he saw from one of his new targets. Luke Musgrave has apparently picked up the offense quickly and could be a big factor to Jordan Love's success in 2023.

What's Next for the Green Bay Packers?

Packers Training camp begins this week on July 26. After that, they will have joint practices as they go through the preseason before they kick off in September against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field. While the team is still a couple of months away from the start of the season, it is quickly approaching.

Chiefs Wide Receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling will be considered a veteran leader for the Chiefs wide receiver corps this NFL season.

Valdes-Scantling was selected by the Green Bay Packers in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL Draft. He spent three seasons in Green Bay before signing a three-year $30 million with the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2022 offseason.

Last season for the Chiefs, Valdes-Scantling had 42 catches for 687 yards and two touchdowns. This offseason, Kansas City lost wide receiver Juju-Smith Schuster, so Marquez Valdes-Scantling should have a bigger role on offense. Not only that, but MVS  will be one of the veteran leaders for the young, but-talented Chiefs wide receiver room.

Here are the three young WRs that will contribute alongside MVS this season and who hope to learn a thing or two from the former NC State product.

Rashee Rice

Rashee Rice was a three-star prospect out of North Richland Hills, Texas. He went to Richland High School, where he was named first-team all-district as a junior after recording 72 catches, 1,386 yards, and 19 TDs.

Hill attended college at SMU, where he had a productive college career. He totaled 233 catches, 3111 yards, and 25 TDs. He was also named First-Team AAC in 2022. Rice was drafted in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft.

According to Charles Goldman of Chiefs Wire, Rice has been training in Dallas, Texas, with David Robinson, one of the more respected private NFL receiver coaches, to help prepare for the season.

Kadarius Toney

Kadarius Toney was a three-star recruit out of Mobile, Ala. He was a dual-threat quarterback for Blount High School in Eight Mile, Alabama. Toney was named 2016 Class 6A Back of the Year after throwing for 2,894 yards and 32 touchdowns while rushing for 894 yards and 15 touchdowns.

He attended the University of Florida. There he finsihed his career with 38 games played, 120 catches for 1,590 yards, and 12 touchdowns. He also rushed for 580 yards and two touchdowns. Toney was named First-Team All-SEC in 2020 and Second-Team All-American in 2020.

The New York Giants drafted Toney in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft. He spent a season and a half for New York before being traded to the Chiefs on Oct. 27 for a third and a sixth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Toney played in nine games for Kansas City and recorded 16 receptions for 171 yards and two receiving touchdowns. His game-changing 65-yard punt return set an NFL record for the longest punt return in Super Bowl History, surpassing Jordan Norwood's 61-yard punt return in Super Bowl 50.

Skyy Moore

Moore started his high school career at Valley High School in New Kensington, Pa., before finishing at Shady Side Academy in Fox, Chapel, Pa. He was a two-time Allegheny Offensive Player of the Year as a quarterback and was also named Defensive Player of the Year as a defensive back.

Moore attended the University of Western Michigan, where he had 171 catches for 2,482 yards and 16 touchdowns in 30 games for the Broncos. In 2019, Moore was named First-Team All-Mac (the first Bronco wide receiver to do so since Corey Davis in 2016). He also became the first freshman to be First-Team All-lLague since Roger Lewis of Bowling Green did it in 1982.

The Chiefs drafted Moore in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He played in 16 games last season, catching 22 passes for 250 yards. He scored his first-career touchdown in the fourth quarter of Super Bowl 57 against the Philadelphia Eagles.

How Marquez Valdes-Scantling Will Mentor Chiefs Young WRs

Toney, Moore, and Rice are supremely talented, and having a veteran leader like Marquez Valdes-Scantling should help the equation. All four can stretch the field for Quarterback Patrick Mahomes and will be viewed as offensive weapons this season.

Valdes-Scantling has a year in the Chiefs system, so with Smith-Schuster's departure, he will help shepherd in a new crop of Chiefs wide receivers.

Throughout his career, Marquez Valdes-Scantling has learned from receivers Randall Cobb and Davante Adams, so if anyone is ready to take on a mentorship and leadership role, it's him.

The Florida Sports Hall of Fame announced on June 19 an eight-person class to be inducted on Nov. 8 at the Florida Theatre. Some notable names include Hall of Fame Safety LeRoy Butler, two-time Super Bowl-winning coach Tom Coughlin, and eight-time All-Star Vince Carter.

This is a great accomplishment for LeRoy Butler, who embodied excellence in Florida sports.

LeRoy Butler’s Accomplishments in Sports & Off-the-Field Ventures

LeRoy Butler played high school football at Robert. E Lee High School in Jacksonville, Florida, playing for well-known varsity coach Corky Rogers. As a senior, the media named him a unanimous All-American pick and heavily recruited.

Butler committed to play at Florida State University under legendary head coach Bobby Bowden. During his time with the Seminoles, Butler, the Associated Press awarded him 1st Team All-American, and Walter Camp named him 1st Team All-American in 1989. FSU elected Butler into their Hall of Fame in 2001.

The Green Bay Packers selected Butler in the second round of the 1990 NFL Draft. He spent 11 seasons with the Packers and cemented himself as one of the greatest safeties of all time. He was awarded First Team-All Pro four times, was a four-time Pro Bowler, and helped bring a Lombardi Trophy back to Titletown in the 1996-97 season. Butler was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2022.

Off the field, Butler started the LeRoy Butler Foundation in 1999 and has shepherded the Butler vs. Bullying campaign, where he has "strived to bring parents and families together to talk about the impacts of bullying," according to LeroyButlerInc.com.

The other notable names on this list are Tom Coughlin and Vince Carter.

Coughlin coached the Jacksonville Jaguars from 1995 to 2002. He went 68-60 in his seven seasons as Jaguars head coach. He then moved to the New York Giants to win two Super Bowls.

Vince Carter starred at Mainland High School in Daytona Beach, Fla., and led his team to a Class 6A State Championship in 1995 before moving onto the NBA, where he had a successful 24-year career.

Allen Lazard made a name for himself in Green Bay. After going undrafted in 2018 out of Iowa State, he landed on the Jaguars' practice squad. However, the Green Bay Packers would eventually sign him, not knowing the impact the signing would have.

Allen Lazard became a key player for the Packers offense in 2020, and fans got to see No. 13 making plays every week. Whether it was making a key block or a big catch, Lazard always showed up and showed out.

Lazard signed a 4-year/$44 million contract with the New York Jets in Free Agency. QB Aaron Rodgers will join him in the Big Apple, but his No. 13 jersey will not. The number 13 jersey is retired in honor of Don Maynard for the Jets. Maynard is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame and totaled 11,834 yards and 88 touchdowns during his career.

Allen Lazard To Wear No. 10 for the New York Jets

Allen Lazard has decided on the No. 10 for his time in New York. The number is a unique choice for Lazard as he has never worn it before in his career. He wore No. 5 all throughout college and high school and, of course, No. 13 in Green Bay. Perhaps this is why Lazard landed on his new number. A new number could signify a new start and a new opportunity.

Lazard chose not to take the same path as his MVP quarterback. Aaron Rodgers chose the number eight, his college number, as number 12 is retired for Joe Namath. Lazard's college number five was available as quarterback Mike White left the Jets in free agency. However, Lazard is rolling with the number ten.

The last player to wear No. 10 for the New York Jets was Braxton Berrios. He signed with the Dolphins in Free Agency, making the number available. Lazard could change his number, but as of now, there is no reason to believe he will.

Mayfield Sports President Mark Mayfield on the Tradition of Packers Family Night

Mayfield Sports Marketing President Mark Mayfield weighed in on the evolution of Packers Family Night, and the overarching role families have always played in the Packers organization.

"If you go back from a tradition standpoint, they didn't have Family Night all the way back to the (Vince) Lombardi days," Mayfield said. "If you go into the archives, the families have been very important all the way back to the Lombardi days. I have clients that I've worked with of Jerry Kramer, Boyd Dowler, and Dave Robinson. Hearing them talk about the opportunity to bring their kids to practice or on the field, the tradition goes way back it just wasn't called Family Night."

Mark also shared what his favorite aspect is about Packers Family Night.

"After the game, the players bring their families out – which a lot of players get to Green Bay, and within two-three years, start having kids in Green Bay – and to have the little kids come out on the field and watch the fireworks is pretty cool," Mayfield said.

And as evident with the Mayfields, sports, and the Packers have been a part of many Wisconsin families' lives.

"I think it's extraordinary we are a sports family," Mayfield said. "My son just graduated. He played four sports in high school, and my daughter is going into her sophomore year. She's done gymnastics and has also been a varsity athlete as a freshman. So we really are a sports family."

The Packers organization has provided Mark with the opportunity to make numerous life memories with both players and their families.

"It's education that has nothing to do with football, going back to Jerry Kramer, Paul Hornung, Dave Robinson, or newer legends LeRoy Butler, Gilbert Brown, Antonio Freeman, (Brett) Favre," Mayfield said. "The organization itself is a class act."

Mayfield is one of many that certainly believes that the organization adds players "that are Green Bay Packers" – ones that embody tenacity and grit and are committed to striving for excellence.

It's the same attributes that he's instilled in his kids.

"A lot of those attributes is what we have taught our kids on and off the Mayfield," Mayfield said. "It runs very deep with me, and it's a direct correlation to my agency... A lot of those attributes of what a Green Bay Packer player is are what I want my kids to be.. I want them to be good on and off the court, good people, and it means a lot to me."

Playing quarterback for the Green Bay Packers is one of the most prestigious positions in the NFL. The last 30 years have been a model for greatness for the Packers at the position. However, now, just as when Aaron Rodgers took over for Brett Favre, there is a period of uncertainty. The Packers' front office believes they have their guy in Jordan Love. Love has big shoes to fill, but the former Utah State quarterback is ready to take over the reins.

Expectations For Jordan Love As Starter

To expect Jordan Love to reach the level of play initially that Rodgers reached is unfair. Love has made one career start and has seen meaningful playing time in just three games. When Rodgers took over for Favre it was unfair to expect him to be as good as or better than Favre. Jordan Love will have growing pains as a starter, but he has shown in his limited playing time that he can succeed in the NFL.

Love's biggest asset will be his familiarity with the offense. He has been in Matt LaFleur's offense since he was drafted. He also took reps with the No. 1 offense last offseason since Aaron Rodgers opted not to attend the workouts. Love and LaFleur have worked together long enough for LaFleur to understand what Jordan Love is most comfortable with on the field.

Helping Jordan Love

The Packers seem committed to making sure Jordan Love has weapons at his disposal. They already have Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs, who Love spent time throwing to last offseason. There are reports that they could draft another wide receiver early in the draft this year. They also worked out a new contract allowing Aaron Jones to remain in Green Bay.

Jordan Love will have a solid group of weapons that can excel in Matt Lafleur's system, and they could add even more. Love will have this entire offseason to gain even more experience, and now that he knows he will be the starter, it will mean more than ever.

Last season when Love came into the game against the Eagles, he looked stellar. The highlight that night was a crossing route he threw to Watson for a 63-yard touchdown. Green Bay's offense could be a lot of the same this season with Jordan Love leading the way as QB1.

Mayfield Sports Marketing has been pleased to book Jordan Love for events in the past. We look forward to continuing working with Jordan as he becomes the Packers QB1.
