Packers ready to rally around Brett Hundley

Locker room plans to pull together without Aaron Rodgers

MINNEAPOLIS – The sight of Aaron Rodgers sitting on a cart and being driven to the locker room is something no one on the Packers' sideline ever wants to see.

Yet, that’s the reality the Packers were forced to live with Sunday afternoon inside one of the loudest venues the NFL has to offer.

As the challenges continued to mount inside bustling U.S. Bank Stadium, backup quarterback Brett Hundley assumed control of the huddle and did his best to guide the offense through the Packers’ worst nightmare.

While the circumstances proved a bit too extreme for the Packers to overcome during a 23-10 loss to the Vikings, the confidence Hundley displayed amidst calamity told teammates the third-year quarterback was ready to lead this offense.

“He showed an inordinate amount of poise,” center Corey Linsley said. “He came in with confidence. I have full confidence in Brett. As long as he has confidence – that’s the biggest thing for a QB is coming into that huddle and setting that poise. It’s all intangibles but I don’t have any doubt in Brett.”

Rodgers sustained a broken right collarbone a little less than 10 minutes into Sunday’s NFC North contest, the result of his throwing arm hitting the ground after an out-of-the-pocket hit from Vikings linebacker Anthony Barr.

Most players were unable to see the hit because of their assignment. The injury sent shockwaves through the sideline and thrust Hundley into the spotlight after more than two years serving as Rodgers’ understudy.

The Packers adjusted their game plan to suit Hundley and a banged-up offensive line, which saw three starters – David Bakhtiari (hamstring), Lane Taylor (ankle) and Bryan Bulaga (concussion) – all exit due to injury.

Despite the shakeups, Hundley helped engineer two scoring drives off turnovers in the first half to keep the Packers within earshot of Minnesota. Hundley’s first touchdown pass – a 14-yard toss to receiver Davante Adams – tied the game at 7 with 10:40 left in the second quarter.

Hundley also led a late surge near the end of the game, driving the Packers’ offense 84 yards to the Minnesota 11-yard line before a tipped pass fell into the arms of Vikings cornerback Trae Waynes.

“He came in and played his butt off,” receiver Randall Cobb said. “He took a bunch of shots. He was able to get up and keep playing. He held onto a couple when a lot quarterbacks get hit, they’re going to lose those balls. I love his toughness and the way he bounced back and kept playing.”

A fifth-round pick in 2015, Hundley had yet to play a meaningful regular-season snap prior to Sunday but impressed during extended looks during his first three preseasons.

With Hundley's experience in the system, the Packers appear to be better suited to handle Rodgers’ absence this year than the last time he sustained a collarbone injury in 2013. The Packers had three quarterbacks – Matt Flynn, Scott Tolzien and Seneca Wallace – start games that season, none of whom spent training camp in Green Bay.

“I think the thing a lot of people don’t understand is with him going down like this, the last time this happened in 2013, they were cycling through backups,” Linsley said. “Now with Brett and a full week of practice in with Aaron by his side showing him everything to do and teaching him and educating him on the game plan instead of Brett learning as we go, that’s going to be a benefit for him.”

Hundley’s presence was the thing that stuck out to teammates the most. He maintained the same mentality he’s shown in practice, standing tall in the pocket and constantly communicated with the Packers’ receivers, listening to suggestions throughout.

The main message veterans conveyed to the young quarterback was not trying to be anyone other than himself this week and moving forward.

A full week of preparation should benefit Hundley entering his first NFL regular-season start next Sunday against the New Orleans Saints. He also has an endless football encyclopedia at his disposal in Rodgers.

“We don’t need Brett to be Aaron. We just need Brett to be Brett and everyone else to do their job,” Taylor said. “It’ll take everybody – special teams, defense, offense.”

As Hundley readies to lead the Packers’ offense going forward, the locker room understands it must rally without their two-time MVP quarterback for the time being. Knowing it's impossible to replace his skill and leadership, it's on the entire team to help carry the load.

“He’s the heartbeat of this team. It runs through him,” Adams said. “He’s best doing it in this game, so he takes a lot of pressure off us. It just means that we’ve got to pick it up and substitute some of that energy, some of that leadership, some of those small things that he does all week and during the games that keep us going.”

ROBERT BRAZILE AND JERRY KRAMER SELECTED AS FINALISTS FOR HALL OF FAME'S CLASS OF 2018

BrazileKramerWeb
08/24/2017

Linebacker Robert Brazile and guard Jerry Kramer were selected as the Seniors Finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2018. Brazile and Kramer were picked by the Hall of Fame’s Seniors Committee who met at the Hall of Fame in Canton today.

Brazile was a preeminent linebacker in the NFL during his career that spanned from 1975 to 1984 with the Houston Oilers. Noted for his speed, size and strength, he was drafted by the Oilers in the first round, sixth player overall, of the 1975 NFL Draft.  Brazile was named first-team All-Pro four times (1976, 1978, 1979, and 1980) and was elected to seven Pro Bowls. He was also picked to the NFL’s All-Decade Team of the 1970s.

Kramer, drafted in the fourth round, 39th player overall, of the 1958 NFL Draft, starred for the Green Bay Packers for 11 seasons from 1958 to 1968. His leadership and talents helped the franchise capture five NFL championships and victories in Super Bowls I and II. He earned All-Pro acclaim five times and was voted to three Pro Bowls. Kramer was also named to the NFL’s All-Decade Team of the 1960s, and to the NFL’s 50th Anniversary Team in 1969.

“I don’t know what to say,” commented Brazile who was overcome with emotion after receiving a call from Hall of Fame President David Baker moments after the conclusion of today’s meeting. “I’m speechless.”

The Seniors Committee is comprised of nine members of the Hall of Fame’s Selection Committee who consider players whose careers ended at least 25 years ago. Through mail vote, the 2018 senior nominees were reduced to a final list of candidates. Then, on a rotating basis, five of the nine members meet at the Pro Football Hall of Fame to discuss each of the Seniors candidates and select the finalists.

To be elected, Brazile and Kramer must receive the same 80 percent voting support by the entire 48-member Selection Committee on “Selection Saturday.” The Hall’s Selection Committee, at its annual meeting to be held on Saturday, February 3, 2018 in Minneapolis, Minn., will consider 18 finalists, including two Seniors (Brazile and Kramer), one Contributor (to be named Friday, Aug. 25), and 15 Modern-Era Finalists (to be determined from a preliminary list announced in early-September; trimmed to 25 semifinalists in November and to 15 finalists in January). Current bylaws call for a class no smaller than four or larger than eight. The Senior Finalists will be voted on for election independent of the other finalists.

The Class of 2018 will be formally enshrined during the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Week Powered by Johnson Controls in Canton next August.

Packers Training Camp - Ty Montgomery, who was labeled the starter during OTAs. This is Montgomery’s first training camp as a full-time running back and a prime opportunity to reinforce — or tear down — the notion that a converted wide receiver can succeed as the No. 1 tailback for an entire season.

“He’s just stepped out in front and just keeps going,” McCarthy said. “ … He looks good. I’m very pleased with the way he has stepped up to the front of the class.”

The second lens is nearly as green as Montgomery. When general manager Ted Thompson declined to bring in a veteran running back to complement Montgomery, it became clear the Packers would need to address the issue through the draft. Thompson responded by using three of his 10 picks on tailbacks, with fourth-round choice Jamaal Williams being the highest selection. Eventually, talent or injuries should separate one or two players from the proverbial pack to fall in line behind Montgomery.

“You just work through it,” McCarthy said. “The teaching part of it in the classroom, we’ve got the gymnasium walk-throughs and things like that. You’re really focused on doing more of that when you have that high — because we’re obviously very young at the running back position. That’s the stuff you focus on. The reps usually takes care of itself. Frankly, the players’ availability and their performance level each day really controls who gets the reps.”

The two fans - brothers Mike and Chad Johnson - drove from Western Wisconsin, picked up Packers Davon House at the airport in Minneapolis and made the long trip back east to Green Bay, delivering the Packers cornerback safe and sound at around 3:30 on Tuesday morning.

The unlikely trip started with House, who missed his connecting flight back to Green Bay at around 11:00 p.m., taking to Twitter to ask for help. The two life-long fans jumped at the opportunity.

Mike, who lives in Hudson, Wisconsin, made the short drive west to the airport to pick up House. Chad, who lives in Eau Claire, met them along the way.

"I went to bed and I was scrolling through my Twitter and saw he needed a ride," Chad Johnson said, according to Rob Demovsky of ESPN. "My brother lives in Hudson, [Wisconsin]; I'm in Eau Claire. I tweeted him that 'I could come pick you up,' and in the meantime I texted my brother that House needs a ride. My brother also tweeted him. He was closer so he swung up to the airport and picked him up, and I met him on Highway 29 so my brother and I could keep each other awake."

The drive from Minneapolis to Green Bay is roughly 280 miles. It takes over four hours to complete.

Upon arriving in Green Bay, House instructed the brothers to follow him to Lambeau Field, where he gave a tour of the locker room and signed some gloves and cleats as a thank you for ensuring he wouldn't miss any of the Packers practice on Tuesday morning. He also paid $80 for the fuel, according to Demovsky. Davon was far too gracious. Took us in the locker room, took photos w/ us, signed cleats and gloves. True class act. All @ 3:30am!

House, a veteran cornerback drafted by the Packers back in 2013, was back in Green Bay in time for OTAs, which began for players at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning. He can thank the Johnson brothers, a pair of Packers fans who now have an incredible story to tell.

A article from Michael Cohen. A great read on Davon House Returns Home.

GREEN BAY - When the Green Bay Packers are on the practice field, it behooves the viewer to pay attention as players work through individual drills led by assistant coaches. More specifically, it’s worth noting the order in which reps are taken.

Though it’s far from an exact science, there is an obvious tendency for players to line up in a manner that reflects the general parameters of the depth chart. Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb lead the wide receivers. Clay Matthews and Nick Perry get things started for the outside linebackers. Mike Daniels takes charge of the defensive line.

Earlier this week, it was familiar face Davon House acting as frontrunner for the cornerbacks.

“Now I'm in a role where I'm going out there every time,” House said after Tuesday’s practice. “They call the ones, I'm the first one out doing the reps and the drills. I'm leading by example, I guess you could say. So my role has changed a little bit.

“People might look at me like I'm weird, but I kept all my Packers stuff after I left here. I watched every game, recorded the games. Rooted for you guys except when we played you guys in Jacksonville. But I mean I was rooting for you guys. I felt like I was still a Packer deep down inside.

“I wasn't going to go anywhere else, unless things were just ridiculously different than here. But this is where I wanted to be, this is where I needed to be, for me to show the world what I can do type (of) thing.”

A fourth-round pick by the Packers in 2011, House returned to Green Bay during free agency when he signed a one-year, $2.8 million deal after the Jaguars released him March 6. He instantly became the most experienced cornerback on the Packers’ roster with six accrued seasons — no one else has more than three — and will be asked to juggle a number of different hats in his second stint with the team: leader for a youthful group; mentor to second-round pick Kevin King; probable starter in Week 1.

It’s a role he is eager to fill.

“All I've got to do is teach what the vets taught me,” House said. “I was lucky to have Tramon (Williams), Sam Shields, Charles Woodson, me and Casey (Hayward) came around at the same time, Jarrett Bush. We're talking about leadership. If anyone is talking about being a Hall of Famer, I had Woodson. If someone was an undrafted guy, like Herb (Waters) wants to talk about starting from the bottom, I mean Williams did it. You have nickel guys, Casey was a nickel here, so if guys want to talk about that, Casey was the guy. Those are guys I can talk about, the way they did things, the way they worked as references, so it's easy.”

The Packers lacked a veteran presence for what amounted to the entirety of the 2016 season. Sam Shields, the unquestioned No. 1 corner, spent the majority of the year away from Lambeau Field after suffering a concussion in Week 1 that wound up ending his career. He recovered for several months in his native Florida as the youngsters behind him — Damarious Randall, Quinten Rollins and LaDarius Gunter — stumbled through their second seasons in the league.

“Sam’s presence meant a lot, especially to guys that are just two-year players,” Rollins said. “But having House in the room, it brings an older element to the room, a guy who has been around here on some great teams definitely will benefit us. I feel it.”

Randall and Rollins are entering what might be defining years in their NFL careers. Though both players were hampered by groin injuries that required surgery, their on-field performances were queasy enough to force general manager Ted Thompson to use his top draft choice on a cornerback for the second time in three years. If the Packers truly believed injuries were the only issue with Randall and Rollins, it’s unlikely Thompson would have selected King with the first pick of the second round.

“You definitely got to learn from it,” Rollins said of his performance last season. “That’s with anything you do in life. But I just didn’t play to my standards, so getting back to that this year is definitely my main focus.”

Added House: “We've got a chance to win the Super Bowl every year. Hopefully with me coming back, we can get that done. I mean with all the injuries we had in the cornerback room last year, if they had me or they had Casey, or if Sam never got hurt, they're going to the Super Bowl. That's one of the reasons I feel like I'm lucky.”

The arrivals of House and King are likely to limit the playing time for Rollins and Randall in terms of perimeter snaps next season, evidenced by the alignments used during Tuesday’s organized team activity. In the nickel defense, which is the de facto base for the Packers, the most frequent combination featured House and Gunter on the perimeter with Randall playing the slot. Rollins took the majority of his reps in the slot as well.

When the Packers switched to dime, everything stayed the same and safety Morgan Burnett played as the second slot corner. Kentrell Brice slid in alongside Ha Ha Clinton-Dix at safety.

Come June, when King returns to Green Bay after final exams at Washington, the rotations are likely to shuffle again. Returners from last year have four months to prove the miscues from 2016 were flukes.

“We’re not going to talk about it,” Rollins said. “We’re just going to continue to get better week after week, day after day and just see where we end up. But we’ve definitely got some strides we can make.”

GREEN BAY - The Green Bay Packers are reconnecting with an old friend.

Davon House, a fourth-round draft pick of the Packers in 2011, agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the Packers, a source disclosed Tuesday. The deal will pay House around $3.5 million a year, another source said.

House, who had left the Packers to sign a four-year, $24.5 million free-agent deal in 2015, was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars on March 4.

The Packers were one of three teams interested in House, who completed a two-day visit with the Steelers on Tuesday morning.

The addition of House, who started 14 games in three years with the Packers, gives the team the veteran cornerback it had been seeking to replace Micah Hyde. House will get to compete with 2015 draft choices Damarious Randall and Quinten Rollins as well as anybody the Packers draft for a starting spot.

House started 15 of 16 games for the Jaguars in 2015, but he fell out of favor in 2016 and the Jaguars cleared $6 million in cap space when they released him.

The 6-1, 200-pound House ran the 40-yard dash in 4.44 seconds at the 2011 scouting combine and had a vertical jump of 33½ inches.
